What is Freedom?

Dear Reon,

Freedom is being unchained from our desires; acting in a state of complete autonomy. Humans are often caught in the illusion that with choice comes freedom. When standing above an array of food one may believe he has the freedom of choice, when in fact he is acting as a slave to his own cravings, his own hunger. When a ball is released from the commands of a hand, it is not free, it falls to the floor and is stuck in the inescapable grasp of gravity. Freedom is to float – not be governed by any law of nature or expectations. To be truly free is so far beyond the bounds of possibility it is almost cruel to try to comprehend it.

In the pursuit of freedom, one is rarely content. It opens your eyes to the magnitudes of constraints we have constructed in our societies and our lives. To be free is to act solely by a law you give yourself. In a society which is held together by regulations, where systems and laws pave the fine line between community and anarchy; freedom is sacrificed and fades to the abyss.

Many strive to be free, when in fact, freedom is stalked by chaos. Although a momentary glimpse of freedom brings liberation, any longer and you will be cuffed in the hands of uncertainty. The awakening realisation slowing dawning on you that humans are instinctively helpless. When left to our own devices without the light of rules or guidance our ugly incompetence emerges, and freedom which for so long we craved…becomes a wicked curse.
