ENGLISH – Varun’s Medusa Foundational Story

I can identify several examples of how a particular foundational story has been retold, adapted, revisioned and alluded to.

Varun mentioned several different examples of the original Medusa story. He mentioned how it was in several movies, one of them being only about the origins of Medusa. The others were about wars and battles or just fantasy stories which included Medusa as a character.

I can trace the changing significance of a particular story over time and across cultures.

In his presentation, Varun showed how the story of Medusa had been completely twisted. The original story presents Medusa as just a person who’s full of herself, but who never had the intent to hurt anyone. Then Athena gives her a snake head which turns Medusa into a killer. Over time, Medusa has been gradually more often been portrayed as a killer and a bad person.

I can explain how and suggest why a foundational story has been adapted in popular culture / revisioned within a particular cultural context / alluded to in a modern text.

The story of Medusa has been mentioned in several movies but has definitely been adapted. Its been changed because it first began as Athena giving her a snake head out of jealousy, but then eventually at present times, people think that Medusa’s head is a powerful possession and if you wield it, you are a powerful person when really she’s just a person. Perhaps this is because people want children to learn a lesson about jealousy or something else.
