Critical Essay and Emphatic Response

Through English IGCSE we are assessed on our ability to read, interpret and evaluate texts through the study of literature in English. We develop an understanding of literal meaning, relevant contexts and of the deeper themes or attitudes that may be expressed. Through our studies, we learn to recognize and appreciate the ways in which writers use English to achieve a range of effects, and posses the ability to create an informed, personal response to the material we study. These responses in the case of coursework are expressed through two different written texts: an Emphatic Response and a Critical Essay. The topics were chosen by the teachers but are closely analysed by us and our response is a genuine thought exclusive to the individual.

Emphatic Response: Merchant of Venice

Critical Essay: Purple HibiscusĀ
