Reflection – Project

Action + Reflection + Demonstration

This year, due to Covid pandemic, we were not able to go on the trip to take physical action on the project.

Even though we were not able to take the action, we were still able to experience the planning of the trip. This helped us to develop the skill of collaboration, organisations and resilience. There were times when the activities people wanted to do on the trip was different, still, we were able to discuss and come up with the way to express everyone’s ideas equally.

Also, from contacting the organisation leader for the Shelter Foundation, there were activities that the clients wanted us to do there. From this, it was hard to manage the needs of the clients and still do what we as the group want to do on the trip. Even though we had roles int he group, I think out group worked well in terms of helping out with each other’s task when needed, or to give ideas on how the trip should be planned.

Being the Minutes taker required organisation skill, and it was challenging to plan ahead on a whole week trip when no one had been to the place or not knowing how the transportations will look. It was a great experience even though we could not go on the trip, being able to collaborate and work independently as a small group.

Reflection – Activity

During the sessions, we often research on medical topics around the world. This brings us to consider the global impact of medical development or innovation.

Especially during the pandemic, we had researched on topics related to the coronavirus and the effect in each of the countries. There are different approach taken in countries with different level of incidence. The research on the vaccinations interested me, which brought me to consider the global significance of the issue.

Reflection – Service

There are ethical considerations that have to be taken into account when interacting with people with intellectual disability. Through interacting with the clients in the service, the considerations of the needs of the patient and handling the relationship with them was important. There were times when it was difficult for them to manage their emotions, meaning we were not capable to keep control of them during the activities.

From these experiences, I have learned the importance of ethical considerations when interacting with people with different ability. Even with he challenged, I enjoyed learning about them and the skills in order to safely interact and build connections.

Reflection – Service

From being involved in the service, I learned about the issue of stereotypes on “disabled” people. Even though I did not have much understanding of how people in the society felt about interacting with the people having the different ability from us, but after joining the activity, the clients had told us on the usual misconceptions people have on them. For example, people had the understanding that they are not able to communicate, or could be dangerous for them to be doing activities with us.

The spreading of awareness through our activity and portfolio construction allowed us to engage deeply with the issue and interact with the local community.

What strengths have you discovered through CAS?

The new skill I have discovered about myself in the process of CAS is leadership. Before, I was not confident with being in the leadposition and in front of a group. But with the activities and services I have done in this process, I have figured out how leadership can be seen in different ways and can be done by the individuals. Now, I am much more confident in leading a group as well as incorporating the skills of organisation and relisience along with it.

Handmaid’s Tale – Background

The book is classified as a dystopian, where Atwood wrote the issue of feminism when thinking about the extreme in the future if this continues. The Republic of Gilead is a theocracy, where all the rules are rooted in religion/Bible.

The story talks about the freedom of women in making choices of their own lives in terms of pregnancy. Many countries still hold uncertain rules in feminism. By presenting the future story, it makes the audience become interested and concerned on the issue as well as making it stick into their thinking.

*Atwood considers herself and the book, not feminist.

Tried to resist ideological hardlines – not one ideology pushed

Atwood creates a dystopia where women are a key part in their sisters’ subjugation, subjected to the patriarchal caste system. But still points to questions about the humanity of women.

The Handmaid’s Tale sits as part of literary traditions drawing parallels with other writings – intertextuality. It can be read as extraloation (taking from that context and speculating/warning about the future) of the time it was written. Atwood imgines a Christian revolution in the USA in response to fundamentalism.

Reflection – Activity

The first week of Season 1 activities has started.

Rejoining the Medical Society as a chair, we started to plan out what activities to do in the first few sessions. In the first session this week, the chairs introduced ourselves and found out about the new members that joined the society. We had figured out that there were many Grade 9 and 10, who are not completely sure that they would want to pursue medicine in the future. This made us rethink of the activities in terms of not focusing too much on medical school information or the application processes. On the other hand, we decided to make most of the sessions fun and to let them find out whether they are actually interested in medicine as a course at university.

Reflection – Project

Investigation + Preparation

I have signed up for going on both Service and Activity trip during the Project week. My group was 5 people, where I had people I knew and people who I was not as familiar with.

The decision to visit the Children’s Shelter Foundation in Thailand was made as a group, where everyone wanted to go on a trip relating a Global Concerns group our school works with. We also planned to join 8 Adventures packet in Chiang Mai, where they offered a 2-day tracking and kayaking package. The purpose and destination of the trip were easily decided, from discussions and researched.

The researches on the Children’s Shelter Foundation was done, in order to understand the actions they take and the awareness they are trying to raise. This process helped us in understanding the need of the clients and to plan the activities we would be doing on the trip. Also, contact with the organisation’s leader and the GC group at our school also helped in achieving this preparation.

We have seen challenged during the process of planning for the trip in the provided cost. As a Minute taker myself, I had to plan the timeline and transport of the trip. The experience of investigation and preparation helped me to improve the skill of organisation and management.
