As a kid, I used to think that being a ‘Hero’ meant having superpowers and using them for good. Heroe’s were an almighty figure of good in the world but as a kid, the line between good and bad was very clear. You were either doing a good thing or a bad thing. But as I grew up I realized that not everything is as black and white, there are always multiple perspectives to any story. For example, yes Hitler was a terrible person and most people in our world today would agree with that statement but during world war 2 there were a good amount of people who supported Hitler, and thought that what he was doing was the right thing to do.
As a kid, I thought the title ‘hero’ was a big unachievable thing but now I realize that anyone can be a hero. And we see heroes walking down the street every day. Things like picking up trash and recycling it, helping out at an animal shelter or even just making someone laugh after having a bad day. These are all heroic things to do. So I believe that we all have the ability to be heroes, we just need to make that extra effort. To me, being a Hero means doing something to help people for the greater good.
During the 30’s there was a lot of fighting and war so a lot of people had lost hope. So people created Superheroes. They created these all mighty figures that inspired people and helped them realize that there are people out there who are trying to save the world. The message usually being that good will prevail.
Although good doesn’t always win, I believe that Heroes help people believe that there is still good in the world in times of chaos. For example, when the Brussle terror attacks happened, there was a lot of mayhem and grief but there were people out there offering their homes for the people who were affected by the attacks and were stranded.
So to me being a ‘Hero’ doesn’t mean that you have to save the world, it means that you brought hope to someone’s life.
