Arts Council (in G12) – L03 + L05

This year our main goal in Arts Council is essentially to pass it on to the grades below us so that the council will last after we grade 12’s leave. This was a big responsibility because everyone who was in the olds council last year were seniors and graduated, and this year we only have one tenth grader while the rest of us were seniors this year.

We made a promotional video and also a form to receive applicants.

One of our biggest worries was not getting enough people. Contrary, we were all surprised we got a lot more applicants than expected, hovering around 20 people. We ended up accepting around 10, and this year we have a adequate balance of the different grades in high school in the arts council. A bigger council also meant we were able to delegate tasks better and even if people left it will not be a big deal like last year in Arts council.

Our first event we had this year was being part of UWC day. We had an art booth set up in the main plaza, with a poster where people can express their creativity and draw whatever they want as well as a fun little “vote for your favourite art” board.

However, we ran into of trouble when the art council couldn’t meet deadlines. We had to prepare artwork for Culturama week (dance event that celebrates cultures) but the artworks were poor quality so we used artwork made by art students. We often had to chase them and make sure they were getting things done and lead discussions. I think the next step is really to let them take charge rather than us, meaning attending the weekly meetings less.

Final reflection: After this event, as a 12th grader, we pretty much left the Arts council to the rest of the people in it. One of the bigger events they will have to plan are the Arts Showcase which I also planned last year for the 12th graders above for us, so this time the Arts council will be responsible for this as well. Before we ‘left’ the council, some of the ideas they were thinking about pursuing and exploring prior to the arts showcase to promote arts was an “Art week” at school – to reflect school spirit as well as promote the arts among in our community. Getting to this stage where they were independent, where they could brainstorm, record ideas, delegate roles was a bit of a challenge but in the end by working together and facilitating them, I think they will do just as well, hopefully better!
