How to help others in the COVID-19 outbreak

While scrolling through the NY Times, I encountered an article that piqued my interest. In We Need Social Solidarity, Not Just Social Distancing, Dr Klinenberg, a sociologist, reveals the pitfalls of social distancing. Social Solidarity is the interdependence between individuals and across groups, and though it still retains the utility of social distancing by ensuring that people are in their homes preventing the spread of the disease, it prevents the vulnerable people in our society from being affected by encouraging society and those who are more protected and supported to help and maintain the connections between family and social groups.

Though I may not be able to shift the attitudes of other families, this article has helped me to reflect on my current practices and support others more in my community. Some of the ways of encouraging social solidarity include;

  • helping the elderly with their shopping or mundane tasks
  • keeping in contact with friends and playing games or interacting with them
  • Donating food and supplies to support those who were affected by the mass hoarding of supplies
