“2020” by Richard Dawson

One of the 25 songs that matter now as listed by the NY Times, was “Jogging” by Richard Dawson. This was one of my favourite songs of 2019 so I was excited to find it listed as one of the top 25 songs. I had encountered the song through Spotify recommendations, and I found that I gained a new perspective on each song as I replayed it multiple times. I enjoyed the song due to the weird and often quirky instrumentals that would support Mr Dawson’s soaring vocals and intricate guitars. Throughout his essay, Nitsuh Abebe analyzes the ways in which Richard Dawson creates heartwarming moments while describing mundane moments through life. His article gave me a greater insight into the significance of Mr Dawson’s songs in modern society. By realistically describing the mundane life of “characters living in the north of England” (Nistuh Abebe), Mr Dawson illustrates the overwhelming feeling of chaos and unfairness in the world which is why I think his album “2020” matters now. Through this overwhelming chaos, many of Mr Dawson’s characters try to find comfort from others whether it be strangers or their own parents as mentioned by Nitsuh Abebe. Though many of his songs end on a sad and bitter note, like “Jogging” when the character ends up seeking support from “some stranger, somewhere on a doorstep or a park bench” (Nitsuh Abebe), I think that his bleak songs should remind us to reflect on the faults of modern civilization and to support one and other through these tough times.
