Four Focus Weeks

International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day was influential of me as it was a reminder of the importance of equality between genders and how important it is for us as UWC students to strive to create a world where people are equal. Women’s Day was a important focal point as it relates to the UWC values of celebrating difference and mutual responsibility and respect.

Sustainability & Environmental Impact Awareness

Sustainability & Environmental Impact Awareness week was a week dedicated to learning more about how we can be sustainable and how we impact the environment. In the week, they talked about different aspects of sustainability such as Veggie Wednesday. I feel that this impacted me the most because before I was sitting on the fence between the debate between Veggie Wednesday, though now that I realise that Veggie Wednesday is a crucial factor that creates a huge impact on the college and is a prime example of College values.

Diversity Day – PRISM Student group

Diversity Day was when we got to dress up in our most brightest and colourful coloured clothes. This was impactful because it was a reminder of how we should be aware and respectful of others and ourselves. This day was another step towards creating a non-sexist and respectful community in the campus and represented well our values of Celebrating difference and Intercultural understanding.

Initiative for Peace – transforming awareness into action (IfP)

The Initiative for peace (IFP) was a awareness program to give students advice to do more than spreading awareness. IFP taught us to take apart and be an activist. On this day, I learned how I can can make a difference and how my actions impact many others around the world.

Commuting to Care: School Environment

Being honest, respectful and acting with integrity are all very important values that we should uphold. These values are at upmost important when we are at school as we are faced with many choices and decisions which reflect what we value. As a grade we must collaborate together to create a safe and eco-friendly environment. Committing to caring about our school environment benefits not just yourself but everyone around you. Leaving plates, cups and bowls during lunch hours is unacceptable and breaches our schools integrity. We have to be responsible and thoughtful of our many actions throughout the day as they illustrate who we are as people and how others represent us in the world.

Commitment to Care

Commitment to Care – what does this mean to me?

Commitment to anything shows that you are passionate and value what you are doing, This is very important. Committing to care means a lot to me as I believe that you must be passionate about something in order to achieve or progress further. Without committing carefully to something the task can become repetitive and a burden. However with the proper motivation and commitment one can achieve very difficult tasks. An example of this is when someone commits to a long time investment which may require lots of hard work and focus.

Term 2 Goals

Term 2 has just begun and I would like to talk about the goals I set in term 1 and if I have achieved them.

My main goals were to improve my organisation and study more. I do believe I have achieved these as during term 1 I felt organised and I never felt like I was lost or couldn’t find something. Though, there was this one incident where I had forgotten my locker code.

When I had come back from the half-term break, I couldn’t remember my locker code causing me to borrow one of my friends locker until the end of the term. This was a funny incident as on the last day of term I remembered my code.

This term I also feel that improved my learning as I am improving in my subjects. I am starting to take more interest in my Chinese and I want to learn more about the language. This term I want to improve my subjects more and participate more during class sessions.

Term 1 Academic Report

Term 1 has been a challenging experience. I feel this way because the jump from middle school to high school has been hard to cope with. However I am beginning to become more familiar with how high school works as well as what is expected.

My term 1 academics are off to a good start. I have got four 6’s in the subjects english, geography, physics and computer science. I am proud of this because I thought that I would just get all 5’s in all my subjects but I ended up doing much more than I expected. I want to improve in my Chinese and History as I am finding both subjects difficult. I want to do this by taking more notes during lessons and devoting more time to the subjects. I also want to improve my math as I believe I can do much better with just a bit of practice everyday.

Overall i’m very pleased with my progress this term and I hope to further my learning even more next term.

ATL Reports

My half-term ATL reports were satisfactory.

I got almost everything clear with one strong in english. I was very happy that I was not struggling effort wise in any of my subjects. However I believe that I could do better by being more vocal in my classes. I believe this is a good start to the year though I have room for much improvement.

Two subjects that I would like to further my improvement on is my math and my chemistry. I want to do this because I feel that math is a very important subject and I enjoy doing chemistry.

Reflection 12 October 2017

Best bits

This year many fun things have happened. I’m really enjoying my Grade 9 subjects, My favourite one being chemistry in science. In chemistry, I enjoy doing practices and learning about the elements. Another subject that I enjoy a lot is history. History is very interesting to me because it changes your perspective on many things in life.

The biggest challenges this year so far have been trying to manage my time. The work load in comparison to middle school is much different. I am trying to learn how I can manage my time well so that I can balance work and luxury. Another challenge is Com-Sci because I found out that its quite a difficult subject.

My biggest surprise this year is probably the difference in people that you meet in your classes. This year I have far friends in my classes. However this is a good opportunity in order to learn more about others and have new friends.

This year I am looking forward to the Kenya trip because I have never been to Africa and I feel that it will  be and exciting trip.

This year I have learnt that I really enjoy chemistry and really enjoy learning about various historical subjects. I didn’t think I would enjoy history and I even considered changing subjects. However I gave history a chance and I learned that I really enjoy learning about the subject.

I learnt that the UWC community in high school is very diverse. There are many more options, clubs and such. I find this very interesting because I feel that it gives people more options.

Advice I would give to the next year grade 9s is that they should be prepared for change, and be very organised.
