Marc Nair: Poetry and Art

Filtered Four

For Marc Nair to write and create a poem book requires him 2-3 years and last year, he made a book in 3 months. He said that it was his most intense year.

Marc Nair mostly writes about cities and society, where he often write “against the city rather than with the city.”

He mostly takes pictures of the streets of Singapore and other people going through their daily lives. By taking pictures this way, it requires him to find the perfect chance and anticipate the things that will happen.

“Artists are not charity cases. We have pride.” This is strikingly important to me because, throughout my life, I have seen multiple advertisements on the internet that talks about donating to artists. I also have quite a lot of friends who base their school projects around that topic. I thought that all artists want charity but in this case, I have found out that there are artists that want to stay independent in supporting themselves.

  1. yes, the charity question is an interesting one to ask about the arts. I suppose Marc is looking for investment in the arts, rather than donations…same, same, but different.

How did you feel about his comment about writing “against the city”?
