CAS-Piano Masterclass Final

Masterclass piano, for the past 2 seasons has helped me get to know more piano players in the school. Our teacher during the sessions has also given me very useful feedbacks in improving my skills as a pianist. Moreover, through this activity, I was able to perform again, like what I used to do back home. These performances have pushed me into completing pieces that I only have done half-way through and I am grateful for this. There are some days in which I missed Piano Masterclass, but most of those were medical issues. For example, I missed two weeks because I had burnt my hand with boiling water and wasn’t able to play. There was another time where I missed due to a fever and one because I overslept during my last block free. I try not to miss sessions because I love playing the piano and every session has a valuable lesson from it. Whether it’s just chords and theory or if it’s about the dexterity of the fingers, such things can help me perform better in the future.

Three things that have been a memorable experience for me is first, the Esplanade Library concert, where I was able to finally perform one of my favourite pieces by Debussy, “Arabesque no. 1.” The second most memorable experience for me was the few sessions before the performance, where the teacher showed us videos of classical music fails to make us feel more relaxed for the upcoming concert. Seeing those videos made me realise that even professional music players make mistakes. Finally, my third most memorable experience in Masterclass Piano is doing a music theory worksheet about chords. I dislike learning theory and I do not learn theory outside of school, even for my external piano exams. Hence, I really disliked that session in particular. However, if I were to compare my chord theory with the other students in the activity, I could see how much I was behind and how little I understood about music theory. After that particular session, I immediately tried to finish my worksheet back in the boarding house and looked at a couple of Youtube videos on how to recognize the chords.
