Writers Fortnight: a boxer’s response to racism

I didn’t know what to expect, i though the talk was going to be about one of his boxing matches. instead it was about a bar fight he almost had with a racist person. he explained how in the situation he was very scared but seemed confident enough to use humour to try and lighten up the situation. He also said he felt a bit more confident because he had a bunch of his boxing friends there with him.

The way he explained his story was very engaging, he made it funny and fun even though the story wasn’t very funny and kind of depressing. the story itself could’ve been told very quickly if he wanted to, but he made the story very descriptive and fun in a sort of way. he took advantage of making fun of the men who were being racist to him to lighten the story. He explained how the story shaped his values and beliefs about fighting and how to resolve conflict. He even had a moral to the story which was don’t start fights and instead talk and communicate or do anything else. He told us that people don’t ever win fights, and asked us what winning a fight looks like. when i thought about it i had no idea. He told us another story about how he punched a guy in the face for spitting on this women in the town he lived in, the guy ran away but later when his dad came home he saw that he was attacked. He said that he didn’t win that fight and that no one ever wins fights.  the story itself could’ve been told very quickly if he wanted to, but he made the story very descriptive and fun in a sort of way.
