Writers Fortnight: Growing up in Apartheid

this talk was very interesting because I haven’t really thought about what apartheid was like for a white person living there who was against it. While she was growing up she said she never really realise what apartheid was and how bad it was. As she grew up she realised how serious the situation was and started trying to help out. She explained an incident where she and her friend were on a motorcycle and witness two Africans getting beaten by police. She said she stood by and did nothing and wished that she did do something. This influence one of her beliefs today that you shouldn’t be a bystander and you should always do your part to help. She said that sometimes she was afraid to help because her friends got arrested for protesting and doing other things. This made it difficult for her to not be a bystander that I agree with her that getting arrested wouldn’t do anything.

This story seems to mean a lot to her as it has influenced her childhood and her beliefs and values. She also explained what apartheid was and what boycott was as well. It was a very interesting topic and it was cool to see the other side. Hearing about apartheid third person he’s been doing makes it seem more real and she really put into perspective.
