A Promise to Myself

A promise to myself. Here are some new things that I am planning on trying on my approach to learning.

I hope that this year I will be able to set myself realistic goals that I know I will be able to complete if I put in the effort and time. My two main goals this year are, to not procrastinate and to not get distracted when doing work.

For my first goal, I have noticed that I tend to leave somethings to the last minute and then get extremely stressed when I see that I don’t have much time to complete whatever I was doing. I really want to improve on making sure that I finish my work before due dates and have enough time before handing it in to check over it. I also want to be able to manage my time better so that I don’t just mess around until the last minute, I want to be able to plan my time effectively and spread my work over the course of the week to make sure I don’t get stressed and have guaranteed completion in work. I will make sure to plan out my week and try to do my homework on the day it is assigned or the days near it and make sure I don’t leave anything to the last minute.

My second goal is to not get distracted. I have come to the realization that sometimes when I’m working, I tend to get distracted and end up spending more time than needed on my work. I find this extremely inefficient and bothersome as I’d rather be finished with my work than spending extra time on it because I got distracted. I will focus more when doing tasks and remind myself to concentrate if I find myself going off task or getting distracted.

Overall I hope my goals to be realistic and achievable. Whether I can complete them in the next few days, weeks or even months, though I’d prefer to be able to achieve them as soon as possible. I think that if I do achieve these goals, a huge weight will be lifted off my shoulders as stress is something I constantly have to deal with a lot due to activities within and outside of school and also from the amount of work we get in school. I will try my best to work towards these goals and put in the effort and focus needed to accomplish these goals.

  1. I also find myself getting distracted while doing work quite often, I think if I can change this, I will have a more productive and easier time over the course of high school. I think that this goal isn’t something that can be achieved overnight, rather it is something that progressively becomes a more usual thing. If I can accomplish this I think I will be a lot better with my time management and have a better balance between my social and academic life.

  2. After reading this post, I am wondering what will help you achieve these goals. What motivation will you need in order to make you keep trying to reach your goals. This post also made me think about how everyone gives themselves goals they want to achieve and how I should be more aware of this. What can I do to help the people around me achieve their goals? Does everyone have the same goals?

I have written a post similar to this, highlighting what goals I have set for myself which I hope to achieve by the end of the year. I was also questioning whether they were realistic or not. After putting much thought into it I decided that any goal is achievable, it only depends on the amount of effort you put into it.

This post connects to the world and just about everyone in it. There is always a goal to achieve to improve something or someone. These goals are what drive people to work that extra bit harder.

This post has taught me a lot about goal setting and has allowed me to make connections in the world about different people and the goals they hope to achieve.

  3. Time management is a huge challenge for everyone, particularly at a demanding place like UWCSEA. I think it is very honest of you to write about the challenges of completing work on time, and a great goal for you to set yourself for the coming year. I often hear people talk about needing a ‘certain amount of pressure’ in order to start a task, if you are able to resist this mindset then you will find you experience less of the stress that you refer to in your post.

When I approach my ‘to-do’ list I am very simplistic, I start with whatever needs to be completed first. So I would complete whichever homework needs to be handed in next. This doesn’t give any extra priority to anything in particular, but I find it relaxing to get things completed and it feels like I’m keeping on top of things. Sometimes simply getting started is the hardest thing! If it is any help to you, then please do use it.

Good luck achieving your goals this year!
