House Band – second reflection

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

LO4: Show commitment and perseverance in CAS experiences

We have been working on ‘Light in the Hallway’ for quite some time now and I have become more comfortable working in this environment. There were times where we had to go over certain sections multiple times for the singers to familiarise themselves with their individual parts and this became quite repetitive, however, I understood the importance of helping out one another during these situations and I would help play certain melodic lines for the singers to assist them. I remained motivated to commit to this activity because being in a collaborative environment is always very exciting as you get to work with different people and learn to adapt. We eventually recorded our final performance, but due to some technical issues we had to do another final take. As mentioned in my initial reflection, I find a lot of significance in working with another pianist as we help complement one another’s parts, therefore the fact that she could not make it to the re-take session meant that I had to change what I usually roughly play to ensure that one piano part could assist the singers. I often played in a way that would give both piano parts space to explore individual ideas while we each fill in the gaps of our parts so that ultimately the overall sound would be very cohesive. During the re-take, I focused on playing more chords so that it would add to the rich texture and make sure that the piano part did not sound too empty, while balancing that with melodic lines that would complement the singers as well as adding in fills that would fill in the gaps.
