Chamber String Ensemble – second reflection

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively

Working on a Baroque piece in an ensemble has really enabled me to play closer attention to the different voices played by each instrument – the way the first and second violins had a ‘dialogue’ between them, the way each instrumental part imitated other sections, the way the cello, double bass and harpsichord were playing crotchets and steady semi quavers to provide a sense of structure to the overall piece. During a few rehearsals, when all of us were solely focused on playing out our individual parts, it was difficult to connect with each other musically because everyone would be playing at their own pace and style. Therefore, in order to achieve a cohesive sound, we not only had to be familiar with our own part, but also with the part others had. Collaboration is a vital component that holds together an ensemble and so by simply making small adjustments to the way we approach ensemble pieces as well as our sense of musical awareness, it makes a significant difference in the way we perform and project.
