English – Marc Nair

Last week, we learnt about Marc Nair. He is pan-asian ( from Europe and Asia ). Marc Nair was bought up and raised in Singapore but yet, he does not like writing about Singapore most of the time as Singapore is constantly changing and he only has the experience of living in the city. Another reason he doesn’t write about Singapore is because the urban experiences dominate his poems and therefore he doesn’t enjoy writing about that topic. I learnt about the poems that he likes to write about ; popular culture, BBC and / or CNN news etc. He is a very observant person and enjoys writing about current situations and topics around the world. He personally does not enjoy writing about himself as he thinks it is too boring and there is only so much you can write about yourself. The reason he chose the title “Writing Against” is because he doesn’t care about other people’s opinions and only wants to write about his own opinions. One of his newest poems is about Plastic and how the world is drastically changing. He wrote his poem in an interesting way so that we understand the facts but also understand how serious the issue really is. In one of the lines, he mentioned ” by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean” which I found quite surprising. Marc Nair really enjoys travelling and backpacking around the world and experiencing new and different things, They inspire him to write poems and to think of new ideas. One thing that he lives by is “we have to find time to find ourselves”. While he takes photos, he looks for the most subtle things and makes it bigger and helps that small thing stand out. He usually takes pictures of local areas, like local shops, markets etc.
