English – Christina Lau

Sitting in a wheelchair isn’t easy for anyone. Especially not for Christina Lau. She used to be a police officer and a table tennis player before her car accident in 2005, which then left her to be paralysed from her chest down. Before her accident, she was a really outgoing, and active person, but it has caused her a lot of difficulty, but yet she has been quite positive and hasn’t quit or given up on herself. I personally was quite surprised at this as she was so brave and went to therapy hoping that they would help her use her hands. Now however, she can use her hands for smaller tasks ; holding smaller objects. For her this was hard as she is a very independent person and having this injury requires someone to be with her at all times. Singapore has a good environment as she mentioned, but, it also has its flaws. Some of its flaws include social stigma towards her and people like her. She personally feels that people on wheelchairs are just the same as anyone else, but can be treated way differently. Before her injury, she used to see people in wheelchairs differently ; treating them with care and helping them out, but now, she knows how it feels to be treated differently and just wants people to treat her the same as anyone else.

One point in time, Christina Lau did go through a phase of depression. But, she didn’t want to feel helpless and continue to be sad about herself and her situation. She soon started a hobby that she had never thought of liking before – painting. Soon enough, she became a professional mouth painter and sold her paintings in auctions for charities as well as playing table tennis in the para olympic games. Her dreams are of representing Singapore in table tennis and of opening an art exhibition and to be known in the art industry.
