Kahaani 2020!!! LO1 + LO5

This year I participated in Kahaani and I danced to the holi theme. I can honestly say it was the best dance I participated in throughout my entire IB experience. I knew the songs and they were very upbeat and fun, my group was an amazing bunch of people and everyone had a great time. I demonstrated the learning outcomes 1 and 5. Learning outcome 1 : Identifying my own strengths and developing areas for growth especially with areas of challenges. Being open to improvement and growth opportunities and being willing to participate in different activities. Learning outcome 5 : Demonstrating the skills and recognising the benefits of working collaboratively. Being able to share your skills and knowledge as well as listen respectfully to proposals from your peers, make valuable contributions within your team, readily help others in your team. This is my last CAS experience in IB and I can honestly say it was one of the most amazing ones!!!!!! :)))))

Culturama 2019 (LO2+LO4)

This year I participated in culturama, last years experience was one that I will always treasure, which is why I decided to participate in culturama again this year, only this time I danced to Germany’s culture!! It was a challenge at first, there was a lot of spinning and I’m not the most balanced/stable person. However, because it was a familiar experience, I knew that the first two months would be just learning the dance and trying to make sense of it all, but on show day, it was amazing. The crowd, the music, the hype, it was a night I’ll never forget. I was willing to become involved in unfamiliar environments and situations, acquire new skills and abilities and I even managed to increase my expertise and developed skills in dancing. I demonstrated regular involvement and active engagement with this CAS experience and was able to demonstrate adaptability to uncertainties and changes, for example, when the shoes we ordered never arrived and we lost the money we spent on those shoes, we ended up being barefoot for the dance but overall, it was a success!!!

Reflective Conversation 3 – Viva Voce

At the beginning, if I had decided to do my EE on a single subject, it would have been easier to collect information, focus my research on that and when interviewing people I could have asked more specific questions based on Design Technology. It would have been beneficial if I had collected my qualitative data earlier in the process, because then I could have spent more time analysing the results. However, I did receive informative data and I was really pleased with the quality of the results but I should’ve done more with them. That could’ve led to a different outcome if I had analysed these results more in-depth, allowing the content to be more powerful and engaging. I used the appropriate strategies to collect my data though I used it too late in the process. I was surprised by how much students were influenced by sustainable design initiatives in school,

RC2 – Interim Reflection

After switching from world studies to a single subject (design technology) essay, I have successfully been able to evaluate sustainable design initiatives in a specific school I’m focussing on. This allows me to dig deeper into the bigger picture and for my research and analysis to be more in-depth, giving the readers an insight on how efficient and healthy the world could be with the help of humanity. I learned to synthesise my data so that I don’t add unnecessary information that will not benefit the answer research question. I also learned how easy it is to reduce waste in schools, with the help of students. My understanding of the topic and research has developed through the interviews made, sustainable practices that I have seen and students reactions towards eco-friendliness. I am currently creating a survey that will query students on their attitudes towards sustainable design and if it has helped them in the long term.

How are we going to make grade 12 a successful year?

FINAL PSE

I’m scared for grade 12, there are so many things headed our way. EE’s, IA’s TOK Essay, Presentation, Portfolio for uni, uni applications, personal statements, it’s all very overwhelming. This will also be my last year in UWC, I’ve been in the school for 9 years technically, when I graduate it’ll be 10 years, almost a decade!!! I’m scared to say goodbye to close friends, to manage stress (because I can’t do that properly).

I’m going to take some more breaks, go to the gym and go out more with my friends and make the most of the last year!!

Project Week Final Reflection

This year for project week, I volunteered in the Botanical Gardens with my project week, due to some complications with the preparation of the trip. Throughout the entire trip, we were behind the scenes of the beautiful garden and we planted 666 tree saplings as well as watered a number of plants, transported them, created soil mixes. Not only this but for creativity, we attended a pottery class and created pots, designed to our preferences and attended a cooking class. We cooked a Vietnamese 3 course dish.

Project week was a difficult experience for my entire group, I’m glad I got to experience it with people that I’m comfortable with and can trust. Though we were quite upset that we couldn’t go anywhere, we made the most of our trip and met up after our hot and sweaty jobs for birthday dinners and for fun. We even got to play with the cats at the botanical gardens, constantly giving us company!

EE Day – 09/05/19

Today was EE day. Throughout this day, I learned that I need to properly synthesise my information as I have researched and interviewed a lot of people, over the pass few weeks. It was hard at first to start writing because there was so much information, I didn’t know where to start. I’m proud that I managed to gain more information from past extended essays about structure as well as more information about sustainable design. I’m proud of how far I’ve gotten into this process, thought it is a requirement for the IB, I am very passionate about sustainable design and I can’t wait to continue this journey. One thing I need to focus on is narrowing down my topic as right now it is a bit broad.

For the next 2 weeks I will

  • create a thesis for my intro
  • define what sustainable design is in education (as I’ve only written about sustainable design)
  • I will focus on the 2 disciplines (geo, dt aspects)
  • I will also read more articles and figure out which countries to focus on

RC1 – Initial Reflection

I knew from the beginning that I would grow a deep passion for sustainable design. Doing a world studies essay allows me to incorporate the geographical aspect of design, however I am having difficulties defining sustainable design in schools, vs ‘green design’ of products as well as eco-friendly practices (eg zero waste).  I am researching for reliable sources of information and I’m also conducting some primary research by interviewing Nathan Hunt (a director of Sustainability at a private international school in Singapore) on his perspective of sustainability in schools and how it impacts education. As this is a broad topic, I am currently at the overwhelming stage as there are so many paths I could take, however I’m looking forward to unraveling this story. I went away from the reflection session and surveyed multiple people on their opinions on sustainable design and how it has impacted the world, allowing me to get an idea of how other people feel about the topic.
