UWC Reflection

To what extent are Ibsen’s words still true today? What can we, as UWC students, do to create a more egalitarian world? Provide real life examples in your response.

Ibsen’s words still remain relevant to some places in the world, however as a whole I feel that society has progressed ahead today- no longer considering females subservient to males. This is especially in countries in the world which are very diverse and accepting, not grounded by too many norms. In terms of India, I believe that some elements of society have progressed, but certainly not entirely. I have been brought up with values and beliefs in which isn’t fully in support of females progressing too far ahead, that they forget their duties as a female- a daughter, a wife, a mother. There has always been an emphasis on a girl fulfilling her duty in terms of cultural and societal norms. Definitely, females in my family have always been given the opportunity to embrace their ambitions and soar on their wings highly. For instance despite my grandmother being part of a more conservative generation, she has studied extensively in her field of interest. However, along with this, performing daily offerings and keeping their home a beautiful place, spiritually.  Even though I am fully in support of women expressing themselves freely and their voice out to the world, I feel that I should abide by my traditional values.

In regards to a consensus, I can deduce that I believe that although women should progress ahead to a high extent, they should still consider their traditional duties to a high extent. As UWC students, who are engaged in a school program which epitomises the importance of service and making the world a better place- we can definitely do something. Even a small act of kindness can make a huge difference to the world. Perhaps we should start with our family and then advocate for change to others. Being involved in the UWC community, we can for sure make a small contribution by participating in a local service or global concern which is trying to achieve an equal society as much as attainable. We could even be engaged in service trips in which we visit organisations to help initiating change.

Relating to own culture – In terms of India, I believe that some elements of society have progressed, but certainly not entirely

I think what you are saying makes a lot of sense. I think the idea of traditionalism will always be around and the way you brought that up is very well done. However, when speaking of traditionalism you state that you “feel that I should abide by my traditional values.” With this do you feel that you will prefer to be more individual or more family oriented? Where does this perspective come from?

That’s a good question- I feel that this has mostly been instilled in me by my grandmothers since my early years, truly moulding me as a person. But at the same time, I myself feel inclined to holding traditional values close to me as I see way too many people around me who don’t seem to be concerned about their culture’s beliefs.
