Printed Ad Analysis

The aim of this advertisement for diet coke that came out in 2013 was to encourage people to purchase diet coke and feel ‘extraordinary’ about themselves. There seems to be a prize as well by entering a contest online, however, I could not find any more details about this contest.

This advertisement has evidently a key marketing and advertising technique – celebrity. By showcasing Taylor Swift as a consumer of diet coke and using the phrase ‘entertain in style with’, the advert builds a direct connection between consumers and Taylor Swift which will incentify her fans to purchase diet coke in favour of her. In addition, people would want to identify with Taylor Swift as said by Martin Lindstrom, ‘people are creatures of imitation’, and since Taylor Swift was so popular and famous at the time, people would be incentified to imitate what she does, which is presented in this adverts as drinking coke. Furthermore, the image of Taylor Swift pouring coke into a champagne glass suggests a sense of eliteness as people often associate champagne and celebrities with higher social classes, further incentifying consumers to purchase diet coke in the idea of being more elite than just an ordinary coke drinker.

Looking at the overall composition of the advert, we can see that the image of Taylor Swift is centre left of the advert, with Diet Coke’s signature on the top left corner, right beside her head. The focal points of the advert are the two words ‘coke’ and ‘Taylor Swift’ that are large in size and attention-grabbing in their use of colour and font. The reason that the typography of these two words stands out so much is that it is contrasted with the smaller, more basic copy that accompanies them. The ‘2500’ is also quite eye-catching through bolding the letters and making it bright red which achieves the purpose of appealing the audience, further promoting the consumption of diet coke and allowing the audience to see everything that they need to see to be incentified to purchase diet coke.

RLS: ‘Tuskegee Study in Untreated Syphilis in Negro Male’

KQ: Should the context be important when we consider the value of knowledge?

In 1932, 399 African Americans with syphilis participated in a study that aimed to document the progress of syphilis without treatment. However, the participants were told that they were treated for ‘bad blood’. They were provided with free medical exams, free meals, and burial insurance for 40 years.

How my skills are developing

Balance is what I think is really important for me right now. Having to balance multiple things such as Culturama and workload, I feel that managing my stress and reflecting upon my strengths and weaknesses is so essential. CAS has been really enjoyable so far and I definitely see the benefits of reflecting throughout my progress as I am able to gain a better understanding of myself and thus be on a better track moving forwards.

Challenge

What has been the biggest challenge within CAS so far? What might you do to improve this?

Since we are only in week 4 and activities just started, I am not finding CAS that difficult. However, it is quite hard to keep track of time in terms of Culturama choreography and foreseeing what is to be done. I am planning to set up a timeline and organise my schedule accordingly to make sure I don’t struggle in the future.

Representation

Following on from your discussions and reflections today, write a Portfolio Post that explores your thinking.

Do you agree with any of the perspectives shared so far? Why/not? Try to write it in full and include your ideas from your last homework.

In the trailer of the movie ‘Crazy Rich Asians’, I feel that the true Asian culture is not represented accurately as it only focuses on rich, educated, large families in Singapore with its two main characters being very ‘white’ culturally as they have grown up overseas. The trailer displays Singaporean specialities such as food courts but it is evident that for the female protagonist, it is almost touristic as she has never lived in Singapore before. I think the film is quite significant in terms of the fact that they only had Asian actors/actresses and it was visually different from most international movies. However, I feel that the actual representation of the Asian culture is not very accurate as the entire setting of the movie just did not feel very local. The movie has also almost ‘villainised’ some of the traditional Asian values such as families, which is subjective and really does not portray the Asian culture as a whole, making it easy for viewers to have misconceptions about such values without understanding the reason behind it.

However, the overall review of the movie was astonishingly positive, with many people claiming that they ‘saw themselves on-screen’ and that it was ‘spot-on’. I was very surprised by this as it is completely different to what I think, which got me to consider the possibility and source of other opinions. It strikes me that although I identify myself as Asian, there are so many other Asian people out there that may be completely different to me with different values and background, and I guess it is okay to have different opinions about your own culture as everyone perceives and understands their culture in their own unique way. Although I feel very passionate about claiming that the film is inaccurate, I can never know the truth as I am only speaking from my point of view and the values I talked about are mostly Chinese, making my perspective seem quite limited to others but completely valid for me and those who agree with me. Nevertheless, I do think it is a great leap to put forward films like such to present the Asian race more on screens for people to feel connected to, however, it is difficult to say if its representation is accurate or not as everyone would perceive it in a different way.

Looking Forward

What aspects of CAS are you looking forward to?

I’m really looking forward to doing activities as I didn’t have the chance to do a lot of physical activities in previous years,  I’m also quite excited to be able to reflect upon my experiences to learn and improve further. Additionally, I’m going to try to do different things than what I’ve done in the last two years as I think trying a new activity would be very beneficial to me as well since then I can have a diverse range of experiences. I feel that all three aspects of CAS are very important and significant for my development and wellbeing, and I’m very excited to begin my CAS journey.

How might you plan your year of CAS in order to maintain balance?

I’m going to make sure I plan my activities based on my academics needs and maintain a work-life balance. I will ensure I don’t overload myself but at the same time keep my life filled and busy. This is going to be done by setting up a schedule and overlooking my program to check that I’m up to date with everything.

Maths and Me

My name is Joyce and I have completed my IGCSE course in CIM and Additional Mathematics. Personally, I’ve never been a math geek but I’ve always found maths quite interesting and very achieving when it comes to problem solving and understanding the logic behind how it works. In terms of this course, I am kind of anxious as I know it is a hard and demanding course. I am not too confident in my mathematical skills so I know I need to put in extra effort to make sure I stay afloat.

On the continuum, I would put myself in the middle-ish, leaning more towards the right. I like to understand something thorough first by a teacher explaining to me, and after I ask all of my questions and doubts, I would like to consolidate my understanding independently and seek for help when needed.

When I get stuck in maths, I will first find out why I am stuck and tend to it specifically – whether if it is not understanding the concept correctly, or not spending enough time doing questions etc. I will definitely seek for help if needed.

I think my biggest strength in learning mathematics would be being curious, interested and inquiring as I find it fascinating to learn about how maths works. I really do enjoy asking why and having every equation proved in front of me to aid my understanding.

An area that I need to work on would be being a better self manager and to be more organised as there will be many things to juggle at the same time in grade 11. I would also like to improve on my leadership skills in maths.

Reading Goals

Reading Goals:

  1. Appreciate more books – properly read books, looking at its use of language, vocabulary, sentence structure instead of just reading the content
  2. Work on my vocabulary by reading more challenging books and taking notes
  3. Read more genres of books – non-fiction, science fiction, all kinds
  4. Keep track of the impacts books have had on me – write a short paragraph outlining my feelings after finishing each book
