scuba diving

In this world of urbanisation, natural beauty has diminished over the years. Lands where trees once flourished are now teeming with buildings and traffic. This is when i decided to pick up a activity that pushes me to explore the underlying beauty of our planet. That is when i decided to become a scuba diver.

The experience of becoming a scuba diver lasted over a period of 3 weeks over which i learnt the importance of conservation of the marine environment and how our actions can have major negative impacts on the ecosystem. I learned the importance of not interfering with the marine life and just being and acting like a visitor in this new realm, not touching or being aggressive towards the ecosystem.

Moreover in this extreme sport i learned the importance of teamwork and working collaboratively. In all the dives I did, the instructor had always stressed the importance of having a buddy with you. having a buddy is the most important aspect of scuba diving as he will be your life support if anything went wrong. My buddy and I were made to do various emergency tasks of what to do if the other person is an emergency. this highlighted the importance of teamwork and trust as your buddy also reviews if all your equipment is fine. we had to carry out tasks such as sharing air underwater, calming the other person down if he feels scared or uneasy and always looking after each other.

before we could hit the ocean we had a pool session to stimulate all the skills needed underwater. the entire group worked really hard to stay active as we spent about 8hrs in the pool training and practising for the big day.

when the time had come to put our training to practise, i had to be mentally ready for the challenges i would face. i logged in a total of 4 dives over a weekend where we had to do the same training as we did in the pool. it was really nerve wrecking as some of them were scarier than the others. for instance one skill i needed to have to pass my test was to remove the mask underwater and wear it again. this was one of the scariest as i was 10m below sea and was afraid of instinctively breathing in through my nose. however it wasn’t as bad as i took my time and successfully did it. i had 2 dives on saturday and 2 on sunday, with each dive being over or around 30 mins.

I really enjoyed the experience as i got to meet new people who had also never experienced diving before. when all of us were noobs, it was comforting to make mistakes and build a hostile environment .
