I have been a part of the Kahaani show once in grade 10 and it was a lot of fun, while I was working on the side in the GC helping in organizing the show as a whole, I was also a part of a dance and it was a great experience. This year I decided to raise the bar a bit higher for myself and work out of my comfort zone, which is why I decided to become a dance leader for one of the dances in the show. I haven’t always minded taking leadership roles, while I can be a bit hesitant if put in the position sometimes, I don’t usually mind it all that much, I find it quite an enlightening experience. But being a dance leader is something that I felt extremely nervous about while approaching, I had never choreographed a proper dance routine before, I have never taught a big group of people to dance steps before. This whole process seems quite intimidating to me.
My partners and I worked quite hard and long to even choose and put together the music as we were given the traditional dance form of Garba, from West India. Neither my partners nor I am from that part of India and even though this dance style is well known, we had only an outsiders view of the dance form which is why we spent a lot of time researching it and understanding the patterns of the dance. The choreography took us a much longer time, we spent hours coming up with traditional but also modern upbeat steps for each song. This took away a lot of time from our other tasks and added to the IB stress slightly.
Hopefully, everything will go smoothly and I will be able to gain some new skills regarding leadership and performances!
Below is a video of us choreographing the dance:
