Joining the Samba band is a very new experience for me, a completely new area of knowledge. Music is an area that I am not completely comfortable with, I have only been trained in piano before and any skills that come with music are somethings that I have to work extra hard on in order to achieve. This is because I have had a pretty late start to playing instruments, while it is something I really enjoy I feel that it takes me a bit more effort to get used to new instruments (LO1). It was my first time using most of the instruments in Samba band: the Surdo, the Timba, etc. I was quite nervous to begin but my friends really helped me become a bit more confident and learn to have fun with it since they had been a bit familiar with the band already. I was given the Surdo in the first session and I took some time to learn how to play it. When the whole and played together I was a bit self-conscious that I would go off beat which resulted in me feeling quite stressed (LO2). The teacher was very supportive and let me take my time to adjust, I realised how every instrument, however small it may be was very important and without one the band could sound incomplete despite there being so many instruments (LO5). I am very excited for the next few sessions and to learn to play a bit better as I really enjoy the energy when everyone plays together!
