How has race been represented in our culture?

Historically, race has been represented through a very narrow point of view, because in western culture, white race dominated movies and tv shows, whilst other races were either misrepresented or barely shown at all. Previously, racial segregation meant that popular culture such as films, fashion, and the music industry was mostly focused on white people. The music industry was a bit more diverse, because genres such as jazz or blues were more prominent with the black race, and these genres helped shed light on a lot of talent causing this to help others. A generation ago, I believe that other races were still not shown very often, because only recently have films been based on people other than whites, for example, “Crazy Rich Asians”. However, I think that social media, TV, and films have a very strong impact on how race is represented. A generation ago, and sometimes even now, nondominant racial or ethnic groups have been represented as simply stock characters or have had very cliché storylines, adding to their stereotype in how society views them. Now, people are becoming a lot more aware on how their attitude to race impacts people, and older generations are being forced to change their viewpoints due to the strong beliefs of younger generations. Racial groups are no longer accepting negative representations of themselves, which is changing society as a whole very rapidly.
