LFE: Racial Biases in Shaker Heights

What are your thoughts on some of the issues raised in the article and in the video? Are there any clear solutions? Where does responsibility lie?

While a seemingly perfect city, the article and video raised prevalent racial issues in Shaker Heights. While schools integrate both black and white students, comparing data would make it seem as if there were two different schools – black students are falling way behind their white peers. This could be partly due to racial biases from school teachers. I think that while Shaker Heights tries to be a ‘perfect’ community, it takes a lot more than ignoring problems in order to solve them. Action should be taken by the community as a whole, including staff and faculty as well as parents of both races. In order to solve the issues prevalent they would have to understand the root cause of them and tackle them from there. While it wouldn’t be an easy or quick task, it would be necessary in order to make Shaker Heights a truly inclusive and equal residence.
