Running hour reflection LO7

Many people feel that it is cruel for people with disabilities to participate in sports games. The public knows very little about the disabled, so that they equate injuries with disability, misunderstand disabled sports as painful sports, and link disabled sports with cruelty. Different from injury and forced competition, more often, disabled sports is more like a kind of fitness. People with disabilities use functional areas other than the disabled part to maximize their functions, so that they can be fully practiced and will not degenerate.
Sports are not just the rights of healthy people. Many people mistakenly believe that it is unreasonable for people with disabilities to participate in sports, and cut off the path of sports for the majority of people with disabilities. The functions of general sports include entertainment, physical fitness, competition, social interaction, cultivating team spirit, strengthening physical cognition, and exploring physical limits, etc., which are relatively scarce for the disabled. The indifference to social and outdoor activities has also caused the disabled to stay behind closed doors and lose access to sports, forming a vicious circle.
In the eyes of many people, sports is a kind of entertainment, and disabled sports is a kind of “yellow inspiration.” Some people think that the important meaning of sports is to give people a sense of spiritual and neurological release, happiness, accomplishment and mood comfort. Disabled sports also have the same effect. Only by recognizing the many benefits of sports for the disabled can the disabled have the idea to participate in sports and participate in sports activities. Affected by the low popularity of sports among the disabled, assuming that sports have so much meaning and help to a so-called ordinary person, the significance to the disabled may be relatively greater.

Running hour reflection LO6

I don’t think that people with disabilities should be treated specially from a personal perspective. Disabled people are more of a psychological inconvenience than life’s inconvenience. It is necessary to take care of them in the social system. , I think it’s better to treat them as ordinary people. In many cases, zeal is worse than indifference. Since fate has given him a body different from ordinary people, we should not give them care different from ordinary people. My point is not to care too much about them and treat them as ordinary people.

-Whether they are disabled is not the point.
-Don’t help the disabled with a gesture of helping the weak
Do not regard the disabled as the weak. Although the disabled are a vulnerable group, they are by no means the weak. Apart from illness or physical disability, what is the difference between the disabled and normal people? In dealing with setbacks, people with disabilities can even be considered strong, because people with disabilities can face the pain that ordinary people cannot bear.
-Disabled people do not need comfort from normal people
-Don’t tell inspirational stories to the disabled
-Evaluate the achievements of persons with disabilities according to normal standards

Animate activity reflection LO5

Who did I collaborate with?

  • I worked with my classmates to create this amazing animation. Each of us drew pictures on a tablet computer connected to the projector, such as Santa Claus or gingerbread man, to add beauty to the picture

What made it easy or difficult to work together?

  • Because it is drawing, so everyone could have their own ideas, sometimes there would be a repeat of the animation picture, because the theme of “Christmas”, people immediately think of is Santa Claus, Christmas tree, the stars and the gingerbread man, hard to avoid sometimes animation to be repeated, so we sometimes had to remove a painting or change the way it appears. However, because many students drew together, it saved a lot of time, we almost finished the production of this animation in half an hour.

Mercy Center- Service Learning – Project Week Action Plan

This service is needed because the people in the center are not as privileged as us, how we are always able to be educated in a good environment. Since the children sometimes do not have as good an environment to study then us, we think this service would be needed for motivational support where children can enjoy their learning at school more than they had been. Also, as we set up activities and games for the children, we would be able to help the children increase their collaboration and communication skills.

Mercy Center also referred as The Human Development Foundation (HDF) is a non-profit and non-denominational organization in Bangkok, Thailand. Mercy Center support both children and adults providing “a shelter for street kids, five orphanages, a hospice, a home for mothers and children with HIV/AIDS, a 400-pupil kindergarten, a community meeting place, and a serene haven in the slums with small gardens and playgrounds.” It has since expanded into a network of over 30 schools all over Bangkok, which have graduated an estimated 35,000 children. They are continuing to expand services to orphans, street children, and children with HIV/AIDS to improve the quality of life for these children.

The HDF was established by Roman Catholic Redemptorist priest Father Joe Maier with Sister Maria Chantavaradom in 1975. It began as a single one-baht-a-day preschool for every child in the SlaughterHouse, including children of all religions and circumstances. The Mercy Center cares deeply about inclusivity and equality. Children who are economically and socially disadvantaged are treated differently from others, such as children living with HIV. Father Joe Maier says, “We here at the Mercy Centre continue to fight but our fight is not just about the virus. Ignorance, discrimination and isolation limits opportunities to fully participate, preventing them from living full and happy lives.” By investigating the NGO, we were able to understand that we need to make sure they feel included and teach them skills that can help them have more opportunities in their future, just like other children.

Project Week Email Drafts

38 Mercy Centre Bangkok, Thailand

My task is a minute taker, so I will have a separate document that records all the content and information I need:Minutes taker document. My task is basically to “add details of your meetings (Minutes taker). This needs to be linked to your Planning document.”

The following are a few small projects that can be used as activities after our discussions. Different people will be the project team leaders. The activities I lead basically include the following:

Chinese Activities

  • Teach them simple questions and answers and greetings, such as “good morning” and “hello”
  • On the basis of skillful use of greeting, teach them to simply write some Chinese characters
  • Rob stool–Active classroom atmosphere, refreshing

Prepare the chairs with 1 less students than the actual number of students and place them in a circle. When the music started, all the members began to dance impromptu in a circle, rotating their chairs as they danced to the music. When we stop the music and say “stop”, all members must find a chair as soon as possible and sit down. Then another chair was removed and the music continued… And so on, to see who makes it to the end.

Singing and dancing activities

  • Children can be in a circle and try to copy one of us in the circle
  • Freeze dance – children have to freeze when the music stops
  • Teach them simple English songs and warm-up games like “head, shoulders, knees and toes”, which include dance moves and songs

Team Building Activities

  • Cup stacking activities
    • Group competitions – which team can build the tallest pyramid in 2 minutes
    • Relay Speed Stacking – stack three 3 stacks then downstack them
    • Building one big tower with everyone
  • The human knot
  • Puzzle – Cut a picture you have selected into six or eight equal squares. Cut the image in such a way that when you join the pieces, the entire picture is in place.

Art Activities

  • Drawing what they want to become in the future
  • Trace their hands on a paper and decorate it

Running hour service(LO6)

“RUNNINGHOUR is an inclusive running club, promoting integration of people with special needs through running.
We have friends who are mildly intellectually challenged, physically challenged, hearing challanged, and visually challenged joining us to keep fit.
We welcome anyone passionate about running to join us as running guides.”

What did I learn about this issue?/Why is this a significant issue?

  • Caring for the disabled is a very important issue, although many people say they will care about the disabled, but how many people actually do it? Running Hour truly cares for the disabled and encourages them to live and exercise like others. Many volunteers (such as me) participate in this service and try their best to help them and improve themselves.

  • With the increase of policy attention and social concern, it has become an irresistible trend for the disabled to go out of their homes and integrate into the society. For example: disabled people go to school, disabled people get jobs, are hot topics at present, I believe in the future there will be more disabled friends, more disabled friends will be integrated into the society. But how to actually see them and be with them normally? The word “compassion” is inherently unequal, and people with disabilities are human beings, like all people in the world, equal. And I believe no one likes to be pitied by others.
We do not have to treat the disabled to deliberately sympathy or help, that will only hurt their self-esteem. Don’t worry about being insensitive, as most disabled people will appreciate your indifference. We appreciate that other people don’t push us around, don’t put on colored glasses, don’t go messing around, understand how difficult it is, don’t stare at them unpolitely, don’t point and whisper, and lend a helping hand if they ask for

  • Disabled people are equal members of the big family of society and an important force in the development of human civilization. Caring for disabled people is an important symbol of social progress

Circus reflection (LO2)

The circus was an activity I had never practiced or learned about before, or even heard of, to improve my skills. Circus community is a very united community, because this kind of performance community needs to have certain team cooperation, we will begin with a training together, everyone is good at training, such as biking, walking on stilts, we will give a performance to some occasions, such as elderly community, or care for children, acrobatics, most of the time we will participate in school activities, such as UWC day. In this activity I learned a lot of strange skills, such as riding a unicycle which is very interesting

What actions did I take to overcome these challenges?

  • When I met difficulties, such as walking on stilts, I would keep practicing it, I would try the challenge together with my friends instead of giving up. It was a great pleasure to have friends involved in this kind of new activity, and I enjoyed the process of developing new skills together.

What was it about this activity that I found challenging/difficult?

  • Because this activity was new to me, I’ve never tried to participate in such activities, even just try was a big challenge for me, I had a lot of unknow things, like Juggling, it took me nearly three weeks to practice, finally I learned how to play this at the end of the time, although only catches the ball a few times, but I overcame the big challenge.

Were there challenges that I could not overcome? Why/why not?

  • Riding a unicycle was a challenge for me that I could not overcome, every time I ride a unicycle, I had a feeling that would fall off, the usual type of cycle was just common bicycle, I had never tried unicycle, therefore on the basis of my own psychological, I was afraid, I tried several times, but failed, at the end of the activity I still didn’t succeed.
