Personal statement (Academic year 2019-2020)

Another year has went past, I remembered when I have just joined Grade 10, looking forward to more challenges and opportunities, time really passed by quickly.

https://portfolios.uwcsea.edu.sg/sun76695/2019/06/01/personal-statement-2019-zhongyi-sun-9th-grade-2018-2019-school-year/

Above is the link to my personal statement last year.

This year, I have involved in many activities, services, GCs, and leadership roles. I am involved in NYAA (and received the reward this year), CREST award (have received the CREST Gold recently), the Student Council, Lions Befrienders Local Service, Surfaid GC, Taekwondo, Art of computer programming, STEM club, Psychology Society, and Bersama Choir. As well as leadership roles such as being the MC during the Chinese New Year Celebration, the Head of the Student Panel for HoC recruitment, the enterprise & business officer for Surfaid GC, as well as the chair for Lions Befrienders Local Service and an active and supportive member of the High School Student Council.

I remembered I set myself some goals at the beginning of this year:

  1. Participate actively in activities and services. (mentioned above)
  2. Get A or A+ in my IGCSE mock and final exam (on all my subjects).
  3. Be happy.

During my mocks, I have got A* and A except for two subjects. This is an “OK” result for me, however, I am aiming to achieve all A* and A for my IGCSE. Although due to the COVID-19 situation, exams are canceled.
I am happy throughout the year 🙂 I believe it’s because I appreciate what I own and always look forward to a better and brighter future, which is an enthusiastic aspect of my personality.

I have made a lot of accomplishments this year, and I am grateful for what I have achieved and learned throughout the year.

I look forward to my IB experience next year!

Transition into IB – 2

Some Significant Subjects To Choose in IB Program

I made a transition post last time, about my subject choices, and so on.

Right now is June 2020, and I would like to talk about my transition experience further.

My subject choices for upcoming IB are Higher Level: Biology, Chemistry, and Maths Analysis

Standard Level: Chinese Literature A, English Language & Literature A, Economics

I have chatted with my UAC about my subject choices, and he is confident that they are good for what I am interested in and wanted to pursue in university, which is medicine and/or business/economics.

I believe that I am well prepared for the upcoming IB and I really look forward to learning in IB!

Sustainability – How many Earths do I need?

After testing using the ecological footprint by Global Footprint Network, I got this picture:

If everybody on Earth lives like me, we would need 5 Earths.
There are possibilities of errors, such as when it asks me of the economy of the fuel that I use, I did not know what to choose.
However, this is way too many.
Now, I realized that the way I am living is not sustainable for humanity. As the resources we are using cannot be caught up by the speed Earth is regenerating.
Also, I learned that as an individual, we can make the Earth more sustainable by reusing resources such as plastic bags, or even switching to those reusable bags which you can bring to shopping centers. As well as recycling resources and not just throwing them away. It’s because most trash is burned in and it can release very much greenhouse gases.

Transition Experience

I am David Sun, and I am currently a Grade 10 IGCSE student.

It’s already towards the end of my IGCSE learning program. Regarding my future transition to the Grade 11 IB program, I feel very excited as I am going to be apart of a brand new education framework.

In the meeting with my UAC (University Advising Counsellor), I have explored that various universities have similar entry requirements if I want to pursue studying economics in university, and that is taking IB High Level (HL) Maths Analysis. Also, as Economics course is not required for universities when applying for an economics major, I have opened up an option of medicine by studying HL Biology and Chemistry, as I like science as well.

Therefore, after the UAC meeting, my decisions for IB will most likely become HL: Biology, Chemistry and Maths Analysis, Standard Level (SL): Economics, Chinese A Literature, and English A Language & Literature.

I am very happy to have my UAC as it has made my transition into IB more effective by gaining more information and advice.

CNY celebration 2020 @ UWCSEA EAST

On Monday, 20 January 2020, our school had a CNY celebration. And I am fortunate to be the MC as well as one of the performers in this celebration consisting of thousands of people in our UWC community.

There are four performances in this wonderful celebration, consists of students from K2, Grade 5, 8 and high school students, which brought out incredible festive feelings to the whole community.

The Song we, as Bersama Choir, performed is called “Gong Xi Fa Cai”, which is a song wishing people good luck and prosperity in the coming new year.

Swimdonesia 2019

This year, once again. My GC (Global Concern) Group Surfaid has hosted Swimdonesia 2019, which is hosted on a Friday near the pool, on the 11th of October.

Similar to last year, this year, it was extremely fun as well, we have live music, food, games and the floating water obstacle course “Destroyer”.

I volunteered to do lap-counting for the swimmers from 3PM to 5PM. My job was basically to record the number of laps each swimmer has swum, recorded per hour.

The experience was great,  since we can get to help promote the value and mission of Surfaid NGO and thus to fundraise and help people living in remote islands in Indonesia.

UWC DAY 2019 (Bersama)

UWC day, was the 21th of October, we have celebrated this annual event through various activities.

As a part of the Bersama singing choir, we sang “UWC song” written by two graduated students: Molly Stirrat and Hannah Jones!

Here is a video of the performance:

The performance was beautiful, and a lot of people worldwide are motivated by this movement, since it is livestreamed towards all UWCs around the world. Thus, I feel that we did an amazing job of performing and expressing UWC values towards others, making the world more sustainable and better.

Thank you very much!

Personal statement 2019 Zhongyi Sun (9th grade, 2018-2019 school year)

It has been a great Grade 9 experience this year at UWCSEA east campus.

I had set goals at the beginning of this year for high school, and they were:

  1. To help people as much as I can (For example: if I see teachers dropped their textbooks, I will go and help them)
  2. To pass IGCSE for a good grade (A or A star for all subjects)
  3. To try new activities and continue them (At least one GC, two activities for the whole year and one service)

I haven’t done my IGCSE yet so my goal #2 cannot be reflected. For example in my science class, at the beginning of the year, I did not have much understanding of the topics that we were learning, however, throughout the year, with the teacher’s teaching and my own practice at home, I have progressed in terms of my understanding of the topics. I have got 7s in both of my coordinated-science class in my report and I think I am in good shape and I will work harder to achieve this goal next year.

I believe that I have accomplished goal #1 and goal #3 very well this year.

In October 2018, we went onto a school trip to Sichuan, China. It was a great challenge for everyone. We had to trek for 4 days, 10 km each day at an altitude of 3000-4000m with more than 10kg backpack on our back. Every day was exhausting. But “No pain, no gain”, and “One’s effort will pay off” was what I believed, and it did happen. The scenery was beautiful on the mountains, with the purest snow covering the Gongga Mountain. And during the camping in the night, we enjoyed the cold wind blows on the snow-covered tent. My friend and I got out of the tent during the night and the stars were beautiful.

(The place we camped during the second night, the photo was taken in the morning)

I’ve joined many other activities as well. I have participated in Student Voice, High School Model United Nations (MUN), Fastbreak Basketball, Science Society, IOS programming, South East Asian Maths Competition, Bersama (choir), Surfaid (A Global Concern which aims to improve the health, wellbeing, and self-reliance of people living in isolated regions connected to us through surfing).

I have also helped a lot of people this year (related to goal #1), last time I saw a Humanity teacher who dropped her folder, all the paper inside fell out, I did not hesitate to go to her and pick up the papers that dropped out for her. Also once in the classroom, a classmate sitting next to me spilled his water, I ran towards the toilet almost immediately to get him some tissue. And the situation was very soon controlled.  Every time after I have helped other people, I feel good internally, it’s because I feel that everyone is not perfect, and everyone will experience something bad in their lives, whether it is big or small. And helping other people to go through their bad times makes me feel better. It makes me a more valuable person in society, both in school and outside. And I am trying to become a “role model”, so the person that I helped will hopefully learn from me and help others next time, and thus the community will become better. I know that I will experience bad things as well, and if a person comes and helps me, I will be really thankful, even if it’s a stranger.

In my service “Lions Befrienders”, as the chair, I really enjoy planning and playing with the seniors. We have different activities every week (if the seniors want to play the same as last week, we do that, because they love playing Bingo). And I like to give back to the society since I am already relatively privileged.

These goals that I set at the beginning of this remain “right” for me. And I am willing to take up more challenges and adventures in the future.

I will also try to join more activities if I can because I feel that giving me more experience in different areas will benefit me in the future a lot.

I feel that I am in a good shape thinking back to this year’s experience, whether it is academic such as SEAMC and MUN, physical such as basketball or social such as services. I feel like as a new student, I am adapting to the change in school very well. I have made a lot of friends throughout the year and I really enjoy that.

To conclude, I would like to thank all of my teachers and UWC staffs and my friends for giving me such a great experience this school year. I really look forward to the new but still familiar experiences next school-year!
