The importance of having a digital portfolio.

Tony Wagner: All Students Need Digital Portfolios

Having had read the article by Tony Wagner “All Students Need Digital Portfolios”, a few thoughts came to mind. First off, I think that the statement he made about our education in the 21st century is viable, to quote, “they need will, meaning motivation, and arguably the most important is motivation.” I think that this says a lot, because nowadays, especially having the accessories that we have to improve our education system something that may lack in this would be, the motivation. The whole point of having a digital portfolio has many benefits of how we, as individuals are able to show our progress over time and showcase how far we’ve gotten to achieve a certain skill or goal. Having said this, I think that the importance of having a portfolio is very useful whether you are a student, someone with a job or etc. because it’s a place where all of your thoughts are collated and initially a platform for others to see how your mind generates these ideas and what will be made of them. Something else that stuck out to me in the article was when Tony Wagner said,” student motivation, of will, of giving students work worth doing”. This is really significant, because in High School as we take all these tests, whether we are informed of them counting towards our grades or just simply it being a check in of our level of understanding, by constantly memorizing the material we are supposed to, we don’t have an incentive to want to learn and just be fed the information. However, through interpreting what Tony Wagner is trying to convey, I think that a digital portfolio helps alongside this typical education that we follow as it helps us to (as mentioned) think broader of the work that we would like to showcase or feel proud of, rather than memorize certain things for the sake of it. Additionally, it is a great way to keep track of work that has been done throughout the years and (again) it does show the journey of our school life.
