Kahaani Reflection (LO4, LO6)

LO 4 Commitment and Perseverance:

Aware that I am not even close to being a perfect dancer, I had to attend every dance session (even when it was optional) within the 4-month preparation in order to practice for the dance showcase. I knew I had to master all the movements involved in the dance, which was especially crucial considering Kahaani and the dance is associated with Indian culture. Therefore, I demonstrated regular involvement and active engagement in this experience, since I attended all the dance practices not only for my own personal improvement, but for the success of the entire group and a great performance overall!

LO 6 Global Significance

Kahaani is a celebration of Indian dance and music to raise funds and awareness for a multi unit non-profit Social Welfare Organization called ‘Voice of World,’ which aims to support the mentally and physically disabled children in Kolkata, India. The aim of this organization is to challenge discrimination against any kind of disability and inclusion of differently-abled people by providing opportunities to learn, live and work independently. Hence, with the means of Kahaani we were able to raise awareness about the challenges the disadvantaged individuals of India have to face every day, including lack of quality education and societal discrimination. Moreover, having to decide an appropriate price for the Kahaani tickets, we were able to raise a good amount of money to donate to the organization and support them with their mission as much as possible.

Final Reflective Conversation: Viva Voce

As I have a strong personal connection to my chosen topic, the depiction of Kazakhstan in Borat, I enjoyed the process of researching and writing my EE. I have realized the significance of constructing a well-balanced critique, especially when I myself may be biased due to my cultural ties to the discussion raised in my EE. Although it was challenging to completely reduce bias in the first place, my thorough research made me more open-minded towards external ideas, which have extended my thinking beyond what I initially believed in. Using the available to me resources, like Film books, media, and other secondary resources, I was able to collect data from a wide range of sources and hence explore Cohen’s film and his creative intentions in depth. However, being exposed to so much information I found it difficult to organize my thoughts, which is why I would advise the next year’s students to categorize their material under subsections right away, which would make the structuring of the essay easier and more efficient. Overall, the methodologies I used throughout the research process were successful in unfolding the intriguing truth about the film Borat.

EE: Interim Reflection

Prior to my second conversation with my EE supervisor, I was unsure whether I was exploring my thesis statement in a manner that would be specific to the Film subject. In fact, I thought that my EE might even lean towards Language and Literature, where I thoroughly discover character development and analyze the text used for the narrative of the film. This, therefore, would make my research fall under the World Studies category – Film and Language and Literature. However, after talking to my supervisor I was confident that my research was going in the “right direction”, and that the structure is appropriate and cohesive. However, I have also realized that my essay heavily relied on story-retelling, so my advisor suggested avoiding reiteration and replacing it with a detailed analysis of the film’s elements, their effect on the audience, and implications. Finally, in order to fully unpack my research question, I focused only on the film Borat rather than comparing it to another Kazakh film.

How am I going to make Grade 12 a successful, fulfilling experience for myself?

Expected Challenges:

  • Procrastination
  • Effectively managing workload and time
  • Balancing academics with CAS activities and social life
  • Picking the right universities, applying to them effectively, and getting accepted!
  • Build new meaningful relationship with new teachers (ie TOK, Math) and continue to work on established ones:)

What will I do to overcome these challenges?

  • Make sure to know all the deadlines and make an effective plan to approach them.
  • Arrange your priorities straight: what has to be done first needs to be done first.
  •  Allow yourself some rest!
  • Seek advice from teachers, parents, and friends in picking universities but always stay true to yourself and know what’s best for you!
  • Stay optimistic and get excited about the challenges that you are about to overcome!

PROJECT WEEK 5 Stages of CAS (+LO7)

1. Investigation:

Personally, I have loved animals for as long as I can remember. Owning a dog myself, I learned to care, be responsible, and treat it in a way to allow a healthy lifestyle. When I first heard about the animal crisis in Phuket, such that thousands of cats and dogs were abandoned by their owners and left on the streets, I felt the need to get involved. I was motivated to do everything in my ability to help the situation in Phuket, which is why the purpose of my Project Week was to spread awareness of animal mistreatment. Hence, my team and I decided to volunteer at the Soi Dog Foundation, based in Phuket, with the means to provide personal support and give as many street animals as possible a home.

Moreover, intrigued by the opportunity of doing Action on Project Week as well, our team brainstormed all the possible activities we could do during our time in Phuket. We concluded to go diving – it was an agreed decision that everyone was excited about, considering the fact that marine sighting in Phuket is absolutely beautiful!

 2. Preparation:

In order to prepare for our Project Week, we had to allocate certain roles to the team members, which was done according to our personal strengths.

Student Names Roles & Responsibilities needed to achieve the groups SMART Goals?
Alua Recording of interviews, photography, and videos with the CEO’s and startup people of the NGO and gain a clear understanding of how they started their NGO, what their future goals are, and what they want to achieve in the next few years.
Zoey Purchase and gather any materials that Soi Dog needs such as more dog food, cleaning supplies; mops, brooms cleaning wipes or any other’s inventory supplies they need
Luiza Create a clear planning document and schedule of what activities and jobs we need to do at the centre eg; when to walk the dogs, when to clean etc
Miji Cooperate with the Soi Dog people to understand the specifics of what is required from ourselves to support their organizations. Also, receiving feedback for what is being done well and areas that need improvement.

For example, we decided that everyone must be involved in the logistics of our project, while other minor responsibilities were distributed. I took care of Media – the recording of notes, information, evidence – which was later used for observation, analysis, and reflection. In addition, prior to actually going to Phuket, we developed a very detailed plan that lists all the actions, timelines, and resources required to achieve our fundamental goals. For instance, despite all the other members already having a PADI license qualifying for a free dive, I was still a newbie in this sport. Therefore, before going for a free-dive in Phuket I had to acquire strong diving skills that would allow me to stay safe and avoid harming the underwater environment. This was done in Singapore with an official diving company, where I got my diving license.

3. Action: you implement your idea or plan. This often requires decision-making and problem solving. You may work individually, with partners, or in groups.

In this stage, my Project Week team worked collaboratively to implement our ideas and materialize our initial plan. Below is a thorough schedule for the days we volunteer at the Soi Dogs Foundation.

How will we take Action

Interview the employees for our service blog to see if we were able to satisfy the requirements needed to achieve our primary goal, as well as to see if there are other things we could’ve or improved on in order to make our time with the service more efficient.

Furthermore, we will interview the local citizens to see whether or not the Soi Dogs foundation has changed their perspective on the treatment of dogs in Phuket, and what actions could be undertaken to improve the situation at the moment.

Camera All of us

Furthermore, during the next couple of days, we joined the Sea Bees to accomplish our diving goals. The first day, we had to revise the basic skills every diver must know to go on a free-dive. Our instructor then had to make sure that we were ready to go dive alone, which is why everyone had to pass a diving test. After that, finally, we were allowed to explore the waters of Phuket on our own, which as expected was an unforgettable experience!

4. Reflection (LO7) watch this video to hear me reflect on our experience at PW!

5. Demonstration:

We have recorded our journey with our service providers (Soi Dogs) – videos and photographs were recorded via a camera brought by myself. In addition, we have also interviewed the people we work with, who gave us appropriate feedback on our work ethic: have we done enough to support the organization?  Did we achieve our primary goal by working with Soi Dogs?

By the end of our journey, we had a complete set of appropriate documentation – photographs, video recordings, and interviews – that allows us to create a Blog on our digital portfolios. In that vlog, I was able to capture the initial expectations of our experience at Project Week, what we have, and the final outcome of our cooperation with the service and the diving company. Furthermore, I reflected on the relationships we built with the people working at the Soi Dogs, as well as the animals that we will be working with as a part of our program: what impact did we have on the dogs of Soi Dog Foundation? did we change the way the dogs see humans, behave around them?

In addition, we will make sure to keep in touch with the Soi Dog Foundation, in order to continue the partnership with their organization, to further support them in their purpose.

1. Investigation:

Considering the opportunities of being an organizer of Singapore’s IFP Conference this year, I have to recognize my strengths and areas for personal growth. First, I am a strong collaborator, which makes me valuable in teamwork, where many different people are involved. Second, being a strong leader I am capable to conduct discussions within a group and organize resources efficiently. However, sometimes I find the arrangement of timelines and deadlines challenging, which why I look forward to working in a team that will support me in this area. Planning for this conference, I aim to develop my skills as an organizer, as well as gain more knowledge about IFP and how peace may be achieved without using violence. The purpose of this year’s conference is to raise awareness about the IFP movement and encourage more UWC students to join us in the following years.

EE Day!!!

  1. One thing I’ve learned:
    • I’ve understood what is required from my Film EE and what the examiners will be looking for in my research paper. Speaking to Mr Scott I learned that there are several other mockumentaries made by Cohen that highlight the established stereotypes about a society, as well as ridicule the prejudice towards a particular culture.
  2. What I’m proud of:
    • I am proud of the way I effectively researched more about my topic, expanding on the scope of knowledge I already had to write my research paper.
  3. What I’ll be doing next:
    • I will continue to research about the topic, reading articles, analysing the film, and looking more deeply into director intentions of producing Borat.
