To what extent are ibsen’s words still true today?

“A woman cannot be herself in the society of the present day, which is an exclusively masculine society, with laws framed by men and with a judicial system that judges feminine conduct from a masculine point of view.”

I think it’s still true that female is still sometimes excluded because of her gender. There are organizations and movements to make this situation better and that proves that there are still problems on this issue out there and that’s why there are these organizations. For example, when applying for a job, there are situations where men are more likely to get accepted because some believe that men would be able to do these jobs better. There are jobs that are seen as jobs for men and jobs for women. One may be tempted to do something she loves such as architecture work, but the society would likely force her to do something inside the house, more feminine and more ladylike. However, it is true that the situation is getting better. For example, there are many female leaders in the world now, and many are elected to work as presidents. So the laws are not entirely made by men nowadays, where it’s a mix.  So the situation is getting better day by day, because of these numerous organizations and movements, formed from many people who believe in this cause. Nowadays, gender discrimination is a problem and many people protest for this casue. OHCHR is an organization who works to fight this cause. I learned these issues in global perspectives where we looked at the universal declaration of human rights. We looked at the causes of these issues and what are the perspectives that surround these topics. Both local, global and personal perspectives. Many had reasons behind these discriminations, but these were mostly those stereotypical views, as Ibsen said, “masculine point of view” And these discriminations lead to education and how fewer female students are educated than men. This just forces women to not be herself, if she has never been educated, then she wouldn’t know how she should live which does not make the situation any better. The infographic below shows some statistics about the gender discrimination. And these statistics show how cruel these discriminations are.

  1. Hibiki’s post shows us how the problem of feminism and how it still lingers around the world. The response to the quote shows how in the western society females are more excepted and treated equally compared to men. This post really makes me feel hopeful for the society as we have started to treat woman freely in most countries, and I hope in the future concept of feminism will be more widespread. It was nice that she included infographics that showed us a lot. And told us about the NGO’s that are set to make a better tomorrow for the females in our society.
