Do we worry too much about the effects technology has on our lives?

I believe that society should have a greater concern for the possible addiction that some people might have to technology. Especially in places like South Korea where this is a really big problem I think that this should be a much more widely discussed topic because of the amount of people it affects

Dpers final rap up post

Which three quotes from that reading link with your experiences in the podcast project? What makes you say so? How is this useful for you as we enter the last three months of the year?

“Mental toughness is like a muscle. It needs to be worked to grow and develop. If you haven’t pushed yourself in thousands of small ways, of course, you’ll wilt when things get really difficult.” This quote relates to the challenge that I and my partner have been doing because it was just a small challenge to turn off all of our notifications but it really changed the way I used my phone and directly challenged my view that I was controlling my phone and not the other way around

“It wasn’t strength or smarts or leadership potential that accurately predicted whether or not a cadet would finish Beast Barracks. Instead, it was grit — the perseverance and passion” Again this is a scaled down version but there were times when I was just like ‘this is dumb, I’ll just turn on notifications for like one app’ but then I felt that as soon as I did that I would start doing more and more apps and then defeat the purpose of the challenge. This also relates to “toughness and grit equal consistency.”

As you listen to your partner agreement responses, where do you think you should have thought more about collaboration?

A lot of our partner agreements were about our personality traits and how we could work together and not so much about the best way for us to get the most out of the partnership. I think that we should have talked more about what we could do to maximise our collaboration

Which pieces of advice could you have thought more deeply about and why?

Like I said above I could have thought more deeply about my partner’s traits and strengths and how I can build off them with my own and then discuss this with my partner

Now that you’ve worked with different partners, what is it that you MOST need from a partner during a project and how do you know?

From a partner, I most need someone that will listen to some of my (sometimes bad) Ideas and consider them without shooting them down straight away but also someone that will contribute their ideas even if they are not perfect or fully thought through and then we can expand on them together.

Which part of the tool (see below) was the sharpest for you in this project? Which part do you think you need to spend more time using and why? How would using that tool have helped with this project?

I think that my bottle opener was the sharpest tool for me because I was able to convey a lot of what I was thinking and feeling to my partner effectively. I think that I definitely most need to work on my scissors for cutting out distractions and I have noticed this in all of my classes that I can get distracted very easily. One of the ways I think I can manage this is the ‘A Soft Murmur’ website Ms Freidman showed us I am using it right now to write this and it is effective for stopping outside sounds that could distract me

Dpers Stop Motion Final Post

The initial slide show made with partner

 Reflecting on partner agreement:

I believe that both me and my partner honoured the partner agreements set out at the beginning of this unit and that throughout the unit the work has been split evenly. Looking back now I don’t think that I would have added anything to the partner agreements. My only concern coming into the unit was that if we weren’t efficient enough in class then it would become homework and I wasn’t sure if I would get it completed in time. As it turns out we worked very well together and got all our filming done in class time. We probably could have improved by splitting the work more evenly in the editing stage

My responsibility in the partnership:

I think that during this unit in class time while filming I was working well as a good partner and during class time I was able to move the process along so that we did end up finishing in time. It was important for me to do this because I am not sure how reliable I would have been if there was something that I had to finish for homework before a deadline. Overall we both contributed fairly evenly and have stayed on time with everything due this unit. As above I could have improved how evenly the work was split in the editing stage of the unit

Youtube upload of final Stopmotion:

Original rationale:

The original message that I wanted to convey through my stop-motion was what I had written in my vignette about how my helmet symbolised my love for mountain biking and the sentimental value of that helmet to me personally. Throughout filming for the stop motion I began to realise that the original message might be too hard to fully communicate and make the stop motion a bit confusing. The core message is the same but just a little bit simplified. I think that the completed video now conveys the message of what the helmet means to me and why I have a special relationship with it. It also shows some of what mountain biking as a whole means to me but this is hard to show in a 30s clip. Perhaps I could have improved with some text or voice or something to guide the story but it can still be understood.

Digital Perspectives Final Post

In this digital perspectives, this unit we are looking at making a video representing the way technology is influencing us today through the planning process we put together some slides documenting progress as we created Ideas throughout this unit.

Starting putting all the raw video together I mad my initial Rough draft of my video as I was making the rough draft I took some screenshots to show my progress. When all of that was done I could finally post my Final Video here.

Rough draft reflection:

  • The most important thing I need to work on to improve my film during the next lesson is finishing the editing process, I am about half way through and making sure I have organised everything else
  • My final film is meant to be 2-3 minutes, this means I need to shorten it, but this will happen as I go through and shorten all of the raw footage to the required length
  • Of my FIVE statements about social media, the one that is the trickiest to communicate in the video is “phones make tens more independent” I say this because it is challenging to represent Independents without the use of language.

ATL Reflection:

Collaboration:

In this unit when we were recording the raw footage, I was working collaboratively with my partner by supporting her to be more confident on camera and to have the confidence to better express her ideas when she was speaking. I probably could have shown her the video to see if she thinks there were other ways she was doing well.

Self- management:

In this unit, I demonstrated good self-management, because when I first looked over my raw footage I noticed that the original audio was contaminated with a lot of background noise so I independently researched how to reduce background noise on iMovie and then implemented it. I probably could have asked some other students in the class or the teacher for additional help.

I also had good time management throughout the unit and contacted my teacher when I was unsure. Even though I had enough time and got everything done I probably should have started the creative process earlier to allow my brain to subconsciously process what I am doing so then when I come back to it I have some more creative ideas and how I can change the final product.

Communication:

My final video does a good job of communicating the idea that technology is a powerful tool that can make us more independent but that on the flip side, spending too much time on social media looking at virtual celebrities makes us less inclined to get outside more and get enough exercise in a day. I could have improved perhaps by spelling it out with title slides but I find this makes it look a little cheesy

The true challenge in Downhill

There are a lot of people that think downhillers are lazy but DH is harder than you think. In a typical DH race a rider will redline 15s into his run and stay there until 3 minutes after. It really is one of the most intense sports in the world. The idea that Downhill is easy was started by cross country riders that saw people riding at the bike park and taking the chair lift and reason that they weren’t doing any work and they were cheating by getting to the top. Riding downhill well is one of the greatest feeling in to world but it comes with more than its fair share of risks, just a few months ago I broke my collarbone doing just that, even at the highest level you will hear almost every race of broken bones, dislocated shoulders, or pulled muscles. But still people will travel across the world to experience this amazing sport. I think that this is sometimes a problem in other sports to for example I don’t think everyone appreciates how hard water polo is. Water polo looks calm and fun from above the water but it is under the water that you can see what is going on. Players have to tread water for 10 – 12 minutes a quarter while fighting furiously for the ball kicking and elbowing under the water they have to get their entire head and chest out of the water to shoot

I got the inspiration for this post from a video about how under appreciated a corner kick goal in soccer is and I started to think what other sports are under appreciated?
