Top Girls Reflection Marlene Monologue

This monolouge is at the end of act 2 right after Ms Kidd just came to talk to Marlene about Howard and her premotion

Marlene Gets a drink and sits down

Ahhhh that feels good to sit down at the end of a long day. Ms Kidd just came to complain about the situation with Howard, he is not feeling well, that shit just needs to toughen up

Laughs

He thinks the world should bow down to him just cus he is a man with a family depending on him, well times are changing, maybe in the past, some employers would have thought that was but its changing now. I know for sure that this will continue to change, maybe guys like Howard, and even the younger men coming through, need to understand the value of knowledge and experience. It’s not enough to be smooth dressing and well-spoken

Laughs again

Although that is all most people see, the surface, the exterior of a person. These people that think they can judge a person just from one meeting, or even just one look, they will see them and put them into a box. Just based on their sex or the way they dress. Fucking shallow, all of them. I mean, there not all bad some people are seeing what is right and what needs to be done. They give respect to people that have devoted their lives to their work. And they see through those young lads and their smooth charm, Fucking idiots if you ask me. But Howard is not that bad, he just wanted the best for his family but the position was given to someone more qualified.

There is a lot that can be understood by understanding the political context that has resulted in this form of gender inequality through history.

Representation of Women in advertising

To what extent does the representation of women in advertising reflect or challenge the identity of women

These two advertisements were made to empowering women the first one was made at the time of WW2 and it was made in an attempt to recruit women for the war effort, the second was made by Nike to sell clothes. The two ads both show strong women in powerful positions, the older one is more focused on the face and arms while the newer one includes more of the body. These two ads are both have ulterior motives, one to recruit women for the war and the other to sell sporting goods. Both these ads are artsitic, nice looking photos of women in powerful positions and they both have bold text to bring focus to the main idea

Ads connecting to cultural backgrounds

Ads connecting to cultural backgrounds

Targeting USA because of the spelling of mum and the people receiving this ad would have to be familiar with the custom of mothers packing sandwiches for a school lunch. This is very much a stereotyped ad because it is making the assumption ot is always the mother that packes the school lunches. What I think this ad is saying is that this kids mum made some sandwiches then wrapped them in mcdonalds wrapping as an attempt to make it more appealing. This ad is not so much playing on the values of the american culture and more just the stereotypes that mothers pack the school lunches and mcdonalds can make better food

This is an ad very directed at a norwegian culture, Mcdonalds made a billboard with real carrots growing in it as an attempt to make them seem like a more healthier option- that would better appeal to the norwegian culture. For McDonalds to sell well in other countries they need to drastically change the image of being fatty fast food, most norwegians would be more intrested in healthier foods so mcdonalds is trying to change the way that they are seen by doing stuff like this

Can Texts Ever Truly represent groups of people

Can Texts Ever Truly represent groups of people?

When you have a text written by an individual about a larger group of people it is always very hard for that person to gather enough data and opinions so that it is an accurate and fair representation of people. For example, crazy rich Asians was a text written by a few people attempting to represent the larger culture of Singapore. It ended up just being a representation of the majority of Singapore (the Chinese Singaporean) and there was little to no representation of the Indian and Malay population in Singapore. I think that the best way to write a text that that represents a larger group is to gather a lot of peoples opinions from all aspects of the group and to make sure that everyone has a voice in the text. In different forms, this has been discussed a lot in class. Something else that we talked about in class is that, is it the responsibility of the minorities to write about the minorities? And I think that this helps to correctly represent the group of people if the writer, or group of writers is from that culture. But even then each person has their personal view which will always come out in the text, which is why i beleive that the only solution to this is for it to be written by a number of people not just the individual
