Healthserve/MWC

We are coming to the end of season 2 and I feel like I have grown a lot in this service. The reason why I joined this service was that I thought this service was all about playing games and doing activities with the migrant workers. However, after doing all of this research, learning more about the migrant worker’s stories and basically broadening my understanding of the issue at hand, it is evident that my idea of this service was far from the truth/reality of the situation. I thought that I could do what I want and play games/do activities that I wanted to do. However now my idea of this service has shifted, I am now more passionate about the issue and I know that this service isn’t about what I want, but what the migrant workers want/need. Instead of being the type of person who’s voice overpowers the voices of the migrant workers, I have learned that in order for myself to have a better experience, I need to listen to them.

Rock Climbing Advanced

Rock Climbing is an activity that I really enjoy as it allows me to challenge myself as well as work with my peers. In this activity, I have to collaborate with my friends, the way that I do this would be when we top-rope climb and boulder. The importance of collaboration during a top-rope climb would be that we need to constantly communicate with one another to ensure the safety of both the climber and the belayer. Not only that but the belayer can help to look for holds, grips or volumes that are available for the climber to use that he/she may not be able to see. It is similar for bouldering too, even though for bouldering, you are really near to the ground, it is still important to keep communication with your peer as he/she can help you by telling you what holds you have available as well as how you might be able to tackle an area that you are struggling with.

Collaborating with my peers made climbing a lot easier as well as enjoyable. Being able to work with your friends and challenge each other is what gives me the motivation to challenge myself on harder climbing routes. Along the way, there have been many challenges, challenges for people are different e.g the hardest one for me would be finding the stamina to continue doing different boulder climbs. Bouldering requires a lot of skill and management of your center of gravity to help you use less energy while you climb. Normally after completing 3 different routes, I can clearly feel that a lot of my energy had been drained. So something that I need to work on would be by building up stamina and managing my energy use more effectively.

Climbing certification that I got outside of school:

Healthserve Migrant Brothers 01

During the first two Healthserve service sessions, I have learnt about the importance of communication. What happened was that we were meant to go to visit the Healthserve center in Little India, but due to miscommunication between our school and the center, our trip ended up being canceled. During the lesson that we were meant to go to the center, we brainstormed some questions for one of the guys (Willy) at Healthserve to answer. The following week, we finally managed to go to the center, when we were there, we were given insight on what the Migrant Brothers go through. We also tried to plan ways to

The following week, we finally managed to go to the center, when we were there, we were given insight on what the Migrant Brothers go through. We were informed that a lot of the Migrant Brothers didn’t want to come to our school to interact with us, this is because they were confused with why they had to get onto the bus. So we had to come up with a compromise between our school and the center. Willy came up with a solution and said that we could visit the center during Wednesday, Thursday and Friday block 3, lunch and block 4. There was a problem for some of us because we don’t have a free block during that period. I am willing to go to the center during a free block, but my only block 3 free is on Monday.

CAS and Activities Post

Some things that I am interested in would be rock climbing, RC, computing, and conflicts between different types of people e.g world leaders (Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump) or YouTubers (Clout Gang vs Team 10). Computing is something that I have always had an interest in since a young age, I think that the reason for this is because I have grown up in an age where technology is part of our daily lives. I’m also interested in learning conflicts between two types of people, the most recent conflict that I have kept up with would be the Youtube conflict between two major YouTubers, Jake Paul and Faze Banks. It was interesting to see how the audience reacted to both sides of the story, not only that but it surprised me that one side even started to lose subscribers because he had been lying to his viewers. To be honest, I am more interested in the conflict between the people, instead of how they resolved the issue.

The issue that I feel most passionate about would be the welfare of animals. I have grown up around animals my whole life, I feel like they are a part of who I am and when I see the terrible things that some people do to them, it hurts me inside. Some things that I have tried to do to help the animals would be by spreading awareness of issues. Now welfare of animals is a huge topic to spread awareness about, so I just focused on one area, poaching. I researched into animal poaching in different countries and found many shocking stories. In the end, the way that I spread awareness would be through a short film that consisted of images, statistics, and interviews with people who are deeply involved with the issue.

Some strengths that I have would be the ability to communicate and collaborate easily with others. Since young talking has been one of my strengths, I find it easy to start a conversation with anyone, but I can still improve. Even though I can talk to anyone, I still have trouble trying to talk in front of a large audience, for some reason I just get nervous and forget about what I am supposed to say.

Right now I am not doing anything that could be apart of the CAS programme. I would like to be involved with rock climbing, tech tinkers, and green fingers. The reason I want to be involved with rock climbing is that it is something that challenges me and I get to set the pace that I climb. Something that I would like to learn about is how I as a student can help the environment. The way that I can do this would be through the service that I signed up for, Green Fingers. Something that I have always wanted to try but haven’t tried yet would be airsoft and sky diving.
