World Merit – A plastic bag revolution

A couple of months ago, I joined an organisation called World Merit that works alongside the United Nations to empower youth to take action. I along with the Singapore World Merit team have been working on the SDG 12, where we are trying to make Singapore a more sustainable city. We have decided to find a substitute for plastic bags within our city.

This project has global significance because plastic bags are a big problem in the world’s pollution levels. After much research about this topic, I realised that some supermarkets in Singapore have made efforts to reduce plastic waste, but mostly the government does not have any legislation in place therefore it is extremely hard to convince organisation to become more eco-friendly.

I have realised that it is a complicated issue, and there are many layers to it because of which it is not easy to implement a solution. Currently we are trying to eradicate plastic bags by providing a replacement of cloth bags. By working on this for the past few weeks, I have become more creative in coming up with viable solutions that could help the society around me.
