EE Viva Voce

Going through the investigation, data collection, and writing process was an experience I never thought would shape me as much as it did, and during my writing of the EE, I found my approach to writing changed drastically. As I progressed in collecting data, the question became more a real issue affecting real people, and less simply conceptual. Other concepts, such as the sustainability models, I applied to real-life, which to me made the topic far more interesting, and easier for me personally to engage with. Despite this, I were to repeat the process there are things I would have done differently, for example I would have changed some of the survey questions so they applied more directly to what I was trying to find out, and I would have gone to greater lengths to include every demographic in my data collection, and maybe furthered the study in a different location. Overall, though, I am very proud of my essay and what I have achieved through the process of writing it, and hopefully shedding a new light on an issue I now feel I connect deeply with.

EE Reflective Conversation 2

After undertaking the process of submitting my first EE draft, I think it has really affected the way in which I craft and investigate research questions and collect data. Where I initially discounted social media as a method of data collection, it proved to be a diverse source, and I got valuable qualitative opinions which I was able to use from my questionnaire. On the other hand, social media as a method of data collection has its drawbacks, and it can never be fully certain and reliable data. Throughout the process I shaped and refine my question, finding that what I was investigating by the end had changed drastically, and if I were to repeat the process next time i’d engage in more secondary research and be sure of the background information of my topic before investigating it. Overall, although there were challenges, the writing process went well and to progress I now need to fine-tune and edit the essay.

Evergreen Service – Season 3 Reflection

In the penultimate season of my service, my group and I have slid into a somewhat routine with the clients, in which we normally do creative activities such as colouring, or musical performances. I personally prefer activities such as colouring, as while you’re doing it you can talk to the elderly people and form strong bonds with them, and it’s also really interesting to learn about their lives and past experiences. I never thought at the beginning of this service that I would get a lot out of it, but all of these elderly people are incredibly humble and I have learnt so much more from them than I thought I would, and I feel as though I ca better myself as a person through connection and learning from them. I’ve also massively developed my communication and collaboration skills, being able to work better in a team, as a leader, and have developed my self-confidence more than I ever thought.

Project Week – Planning

Our project week will take place from the 3rd until the 9th of June in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. I have had a variety of leadership roles throughout the planning process, including creating and writing detailed itineraries, booking and paying for experiences and contacting third party providers. Our group has very good communication, and when we have an issue it is relatively easy for us to resolve it. Although we got rejected from our first few destinations of choice due to poor planning, our ability eventually evolved and the harder we worked on planning a trip, the more we progressed, and got acceptance on our third plan. Even when our third party provider fell through on us, as a group we stayed resilient and found a solution to the problem – an alternate provider for service, and even added activity and creativity into our itinerary.

Evergreen Service – Final Reflection

Our service leader suggested to us an idea of creating a documentary, as such, of the lives of our clients, as some of their stories are incredibly interesting and powerful. We debated this for a while, but then decided against it, due to language barriers, and their reluctance to talk. Instead, we spent the majority of sessions engaging with them on a . more personal level, for example asking them about their own lives. This was actually personally a really rewarding experience for me, as I was helping provide friendship and keep them company, while in return finding out really amazing stories. Throughout this season I also accomplished LO4 and LO5, commitment and collaboration, collaborating with both the clients and my friends in their service, discussing what creative ideas we could each bring to the next session, and commitment in leading the sessions, which we would do in pairs, and plan for the weeks ahead.
