Multivocality

A single text often- if not always, has multiple meanings that different people understand differently. It allows a discussion to happen and spark similarities or conflicts between people. In terms of national identity, people each feel their own way towards different cultures and nations. Whether they are extremely patriotic or prefer another country to their own, they are establishing their own sense of national identity. People interpret all sorts of things in their own way, this is why there are so many conflicts and debates around the world. People each have their own backgrounds that have influenced them to believe certain things. In terms of English class, and why we bother to analyze different texts, we do this to dig deeper and see how we interpret what the author is writing about. Although there may be common themes to any text, discussions, and questions can still arise based on the person’s interpretation. With almost anything in this world, it is difficult to pinpoint a singular meaning that directly fits into it. There are almost always overlapping themes or clashing ideas. This is important to continue growing as a society, to be able to be empathic towards other people’s opinions yet still holding your own beliefs close.
