Representation of women in advertising

To what extent does the representation of women in advertising reflect or challenge the identity of women?

What values/stereotypes/attitude are being conveyed?

In the first post, the advert was obviously aiming at men as it presents women as sexual objects. On the advert, it says ‘blow in her face and she’ll follow you’. In a way, the advert is comparing women as a pet in the way that they will follow men everywhere. There is a blatant sense of disrespect to women here.

In the second advert, the advert has a lot of sexual implication both for women and men. For example, the position of the hotdog and the position of the women explicit convey sexual activities. The use of words ‘blow’ and ‘six incher’ also implicates sexual connotation. From the advert, we can also see how the society expect women to behave with men and how there are expectation upon men.

How are the adverts similar/different in conveying this?

The two adverts are similar in the way that they both sexualise the advertisement for products that has nothing relating to sex. The first advert is advertising for cigarettes and the reason why they sexualised the advert is because the advert was produced a while back, during that time, it is normal that most men smokes so sexualising women means that in a way, they are targeting the advert to men. The second advert is advertising hotdogs which also has nothing relating to sex. In my opinion, the company decided to sexualise this advert to make it more eye-catching. In this case, both female and male are sexualise. The sexualisation of female can be interpreted from the picture of the woman and the hotdog. The sexualisation of male can be interpreted from the line ‘seven inches’. The sexualisation applies to both male and female here because the ad was aiming at both female and male.

How do they provoke thinking about global issues?

The adverts provoking thinking about the culture of sexualising people nowadays. It seems like sexualising people has become a trend in our society as the culture can often be found in music and art. Many people think that the provocative lyrics in music doesn’t mean anything but it is slowly influencing people of their perception of other people and how they are treating other people.

How does the craftsmanship of the text explore the ideas of representation and identity?

The craftsmanship of the text explore the at the society perceive people and how as a society, we have the bad habit of spreading morally wrong ideas just for the attention. As we audience know, we often remember advert that are provocative than your normal advert.
