This week, we focused on Sestinas and in particular, ‘The Book of Yolek.’ It focuses on the idea of the Holocaust and how we must remember each and every one of the deaths in the Holocaust as significant, rather than simply just looking at a number, we need to empathise and understand how it affected the individuals. I found the ‘Book of Yolek’ particularly interesting because of the way that the story progresses and there is a significant shift in tone and mood which highlights the contrast between a regular camping trip and the horrible tragedy of the holocaust. One thing I noticed when I was annotating, however, was that I focused more on the structure of the poem, and less on techniques like imagery and contrast that would have also been interesting to look at in the poem.
