Right now I am learning a lot about Indian dancing and the difficulties that come with acquiring new skills. I’ve had to show a lot of perseverance these last couple of weeks because it hasn’t always been easy for me to remain committed to this activity – coming to the holiday and weekend rehearsals when I’ve been busy with other school work. Some of these weeks have been particularly difficult for me, with many assessments going while still having to go to all these rehearsals. However, I am also learning a lot about the importance of these rehearsals in refining the performance and reflecting upon areas of growth and improvement by filming our rehearsals and self-evaluating ourselves. I think my friend who is doing Kahaani with me (Anoushka) really helped keep my motivation up by reminding me of how wonderful the last performance will be if we continue to stay committed and continue to practise the dance. As a result, I can also see my own dancing improve over time. In the beginning, I can barely do each dance move and I have no fluidity in my movements, however, by reflecting on my strengths and reflecting on my weaknesses and practising, I think I’ve really been able to improve. Though I am still nowhere near the level of the dance leaders, I’m happy to say that I think I am improving slowly in this activity through my continued resilience and ongoing reflection.
