The Story of My Learning Starts Here…

CAS Final Interview

Chinese Calligraphy Reflection

I have learnt Chinese Calligraphy for 8 years before joining Chinese Calligraphy club last term. I want to practice my writing every week so that I would not forget the writing skills I have obtained earlier. At the start of the term, a supervisor handed us few brush copybooks. I was a little disappointed that there is no professional teacher teaching us. So I practiced Regular script and Clerical script on my own over the term. For me, practicing Chinese calligraphy is a way to stay focus and maintain a sense of inner peace. I also taught other students how to write as they are all beginners. For example, I taught a group of people the correct way of holding a brush while writing. More importantly, I learnt to appreciate the power of Chinese character and acknowledged the fact that each Chinese character has a special origin and history. In Chinese calligraphy club, I was surprised to see that there are not only Chinese students but also students from other countries and other cultural backgrounds. I was very proud and glad to see that more students became interested in and amazed by the sophistication of Chinese culture with practicing and understanding Chinese calligraphy. I would also assist them in writing and learning Chinese character when they need my help. Overall, I really enjoy practicing Chinese Calligraphy every Thursday.

LO 1 AWARENESS (Increased awareness of strengths and areas for growth)

Final Reflection

Reflecting on my entire EE journey, I feel a sense of satisfaction and fulfilment. This experience has provided me with the opportunity to read and research extensively so that I could complete the task. My supervisor had supported me along the way.

Throughout the process, I encountered many unexpected challenges. It was not easy to source for relevant articles on each of the category that I wanted to explore. It took me time to gather information and construct my ideas. Then, it was challenging to inject an insightful analysis that contains my personal voice. Grammar was the other area that I was very concerned with, so I reviewed my work constantly and carefully. Nevertheless, I was determined to overcome them. I relooked and reorganised my scope and decided to use a more critical approach. My perseverance and critical thinking helped me through.

Writing EE has taught me to manage the unexpected and remain positive. I learnt to filter through loads of information to analyze and investigate. My research skills have greatly developed which will enhance my university learning in the near future. Having completed my EE has given me more confidence in the English Language.

Interim Reflection

I have now finished my research on Facebook and started to gather information for Twitter. During my research process, I found ‘Ebsco’ not very useful, so I proceeded to search wisely for information on Google.

My understanding of the topic has developed from reading many academic journals, e.g ‘A brief history of the Facebook’. Also, I decided to structure my essay by giving each section subheadings. However, I faced the challenge of critically filtering all the information I gathered and analyzing them in-depth. It was hard to develop my ideas.

Then, I asked my supervisor on areas for improvement. He suggested that I use more research to support my interpretations and link ideas back to the research question.

Yet, I continued to encounter challenges in finding and obtaining relevant information for some parts of my essay. For instance, Facebook has a lot of resources but Twitter has very little useful ones.

MATH END OF YEAR REFLECTION

Reflection Graph:

If you could do anything differently next time what would it be? Why?

I would review the content after every math class and practice some past paper questions every day. Because it is better if I could understand every topic well  instead of practice a lot a week before the exam.

If you could only remember two things from this exam process in the future what would they be? Why?

Use my time efficiently during exams and don’t be careless. I feel I spent too much time on one question in my mock and therefore affected my overall performance.

What would you tell yourself next year when you do the actual IB exam? Why?

The first thing would be– be confident, you can do it! I feel confidence is very important in solving math questions as if you believe that you can do it, then you will be able to do it. Don’t deny yourself when you see hard questions, read several times if you don’t understand the question. The second thing would be–don’t be careless!! Check your calculator. Read the question twice before you start doing it and make sure you don’t copy the question wrongly.

What was the most interesting aspect of the course so far? Why?

Solving difficult questions. Sometimes I read the question many times and still can’t find a way to solve it and don’t know where to start. It is interesting to understand the method after discussion.

Leaning new topics.  I find statistics very interesting especially binomial distribution and Poisson distribution.

What was the most challenging aspect and why?

Apply the content I learnt into solving the math questions. Sometimes I feel that I know the content well but I still find difficulties in solving some hard questions.

Group 4 Project–“Breakout”

Group 13

What were your major contributions to your group’s investigation? What did you actually do to contribute to the success of the group?

I created the puzzle for directional lock relating to areas of physics and nuclear fissions. The steps are: After opening the small box the players will have to remove the crossword puzzle. After noticing the puzzle has already been filled out, they will have to look for other clues. They will then notice the ‘blank’ paper stuck to the top corner of the crossword puzzle. They will have to use the light from the invisible pen to view the hint. After they see that the drawing is of the directional lock, they should understand that they need to reorder the sentences and identify their placement on the crossword puzzle. E.g. down, right, down, right, right, down. After doing so, they will input this into the directional lock and unlock it.

What skills and qualities did you develop during the project?

I learnt how to work as one team and break the task down into different parts. I learnt how to corporate with people that I don’t really know before and share my ideas with them. For example, I and my small group created the puzzle for the directional lock. Also, I think communication is very important as we need to stick to one theme and create puzzles based on the background story. For example, we did nuclear fissions. It is also important to ensure every member of our group knows the game flow. Also, when we go to other class and solve the puzzles, we need to communicate as well because some information is actually connected together. At one game, our group was just working in small groups without much communication and then it ended up that actually we have gotten all the information but we did not connect them together.

I have also developed my critical thinking skill and developed my creativity through making the puzzles.

My Reflective Statement

Our project is about designing a “Breakout” using 5 sciences and we split tasks respectively. I came up with a “crossword” idea where unlocking the directional lock needs to solve through a set of puzzles including sentence reordering and keyword placement. My teammates supported my idea and we developed the idea of linking to physics and background story. We also made adjustments to ensure students will gain some knowledge from playing it.

Through this, I offered a critical thinking and ‘thinking-out-of-the-box’ perspective to my team. I think collaboration and communication are keys to a good ‘Breakout’ design and game.

Proud?
Service – work with her boy very well, he trusts her, worked hard to get his attention, can see the improvement in him, mum is very thankful/grateful for their help.

Project Week Group Reflection 1)

Initially, we felt quite challenged by responsibility and task given to us, as we had never planned a trip independently, and had never realised how intricately trips need to be planned. For instance, we had to find a reliable partner in Taiwan for our adventure activities and service, that would be approved by the school in terms of safety. The tasks kept on building up, and we felt slightly overwhelmed.

However, as a group, we soon picked up our pace and began to assign tasks to each other and split up the workload. For example, Hanna helped liaison with Grasshopper Adventures, Yukta booked the hotel, Trisha bought the first aid kit and Judy collected information on Taiwan. This worked well since it meant that more people were contributing. It also helped us get closer as a group since initially, we all didn’t know each other very well.

In terms of contacting the organisation, everything went by pretty smoothly. While other groups around us did not know where to stay, or had trouble getting permission for their activity/service element, we did not have a problem with this. Since it is a tour, we did not have to plan as much as other groups on our own. They were able to come back to us within a day or two, and helped us amend our itineraries.

While the cost of our project does exceed $1000, we believed that this was for the better, since an experience like this does not come knocking on your door everyday. We were able to get permission for this at an early stage, therefore we did not face much difficulty.

In terms of service, the organisation, Grasshopper Adventures, was able to connect us with an NGO (New Dawn Educare Centre). Here, they take care of and entertain people with disabilities. Since we wanted to create a larger impact than we would make just by being there, we decided on creating an infographic and a video that would raise awareness of the issue to the people of our school, as well as invite people to help New Dawn Educare Centre directly. To achieve this goal, we assigned roles to each of us (Hanna and Judy to make the infographic, Trisha and Yukta to make the video), and decided on getting as much information as we can from the people at New Dawn while we are there, as well as collect photos/videos from the organisation (with permission) to make the video.
