Dance showcase 2020 Reflection

LEARNING OUTCOME

Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively

December

Benefits of working collaboratively: As I’m a slow dance learner, collaboration between dancers is important in terms of teaching and learning all the moves.

10th: This is my first rehearsal(I have unplugged last Tuesday lunch time) and it was really well. To me, dance in front of others, especially my friend, is somewhat embarrassing. However, this time my friend is the leader and I must not keep that attitude. Our dance has three parts: Jazz, Hip-hop and contemporary. I really want to try Jazz this year as it’s one of the dances I’ve never done before.

17th: Our rehearsal got cancelled since most of the dancers are away for Wavelength rehearsal.

January

Benefits of working collaboratively: Reinforce the details of moves helps learning

14th: We learnt a new part of the dance. We are allowed to choose if we want to do contempt or Jazz. Last time I got rejected from a dance because I’m not really good at Jazz, and its something new to me. The moves aren’t big and hard to remember. The leaders managed to teach us 3/4 of the whole thing, which is not much, but I can’t figure out the moves without someone leading me. Clearly, I need more practice at home.

21st: I still memorised some moves as I practiced a few times at home. It is much more effective when you learn it outside of school as well. Unfortunately I missed one rehearsal as I have unplugged and I need to learn the moves they taught. It is hard to find a free time for that and I think the show is not far. However, everything beside that is all going quite well.

February

Benefits of working collaboratively: Learn more about myself from other perspectives

4th: We worked out the formation today for Jazz. As our dance leader is absent for two weeks, I helped out. Some people were missing rehearsals so me and the dance leader helped them with the moves. I enjoy doing this as it can also reflects what I’ve done wrong and improve my own skills.

11th: Me and the dance leader and some other dancers practice the formation for ‘friends like me’. I realised collaboration is quite important in dance as people have different ideas and they share them to produce a better idea. Our dance worked out really well, and I’m really glad that we did a lot without the dance leaders.

14th: We ran through the whole dance for a several times. After knowing the dance quite well, I tried to put in some energy and exaggerate my moves, which is needed in a modern and Jazzy dance like ‘Aladdin.’

25th: We had a rehearsal in the auditorium. There is a lot of things I still need to work on: Where to stand, who is next to me, cope with anxiety and nervousness etc. Everyone seems a bit uncomfortable on stage, without a mirror in front. As we still have 4 full light plot until the show, I’m sure that I and all the dancers can overcome all these.

Everything worked out really well! Although the first run I messed up a lot, the second run is almost flawless. People cheering for us also did a huge favour. Our dance leader also pointed out last few bits that we need to fix, everyone is now very open to suggestions. It was such a huge improvement as our leaders use to be kind of nagging and forced us to do this and that all the time and dancers are just not paying much attention. However now, we only want to make the dance look better and we appreciate all the efforts dancers and leaders put in.

26th: Today I felt a lot more confident than yesterday. There is a move that was changed a few days ago that I still couldn’t remember to replace. Today I finally make that happened, although it is only a very small detail, but I want to make sure while I’m teaching other dancers how to sync their moves with others I’m also supervising myself.

28th: The Show was really successful. Although there is only a few people watching and most are parents, I’m surprised I still have a huge amount of energy, which is not really often. It is crucial to know the fact that dance is something more about your own but not about who the audiences are. Although this is not really my goal, but I’m happy to consider this as one of my huge improvements in dance this year.
