With the help of outline and information from the padlet, I was able to identify key ideas that I needed to talk about. Although we were on remote learning at that time, some of my friends and I who took similar text types were able to come together and help each other by sharing our thesis and main ideas while also correcting the mistakes or vague points we found in each others’ outline. I think this made me feel more confident about my preparation and the main ideas that I outlined to talk about.

My main theme was to analyse and unpack how the identity is affected by the societal norms and expectations in both literature and non-literature text while also emphasising the significance of their background and context of the text.

Identity in Novel:

  •  Identity is affected by society
  • Gender identity is affected by cultural expectation gender roles
  • Society values limit identity – not being able to make their own decisions

Identity (photograph):

  • Identity is affected by society
  • Identity is influenced by economic role in society
  • It is limited by the society

Student Alumni and Foundation Council Reflection #2

LO#4

As the sessions were conducted, we were introduced to more interesting facts about the Alumni Foundation and how they have been keeping up with their activities every year while still connecting with many other alumnus. For instance, I found it very fun and unique when we took photos of how we would look like or where we see ourselves in 10 years from now. At first, I didn’t get why we were taking photo right now for something that we would take only after 10 years but I came to realise that it was for our reunion, our memories and featuring our diverse cultural backgrounds which made me feel fascinated.

Career Week.

Career week was another activity that I found it very fun and engaging. Even though we had career week last year in grade 11, a lot of things and my plan for what I want to study in college have changed so at that time and this time I was exploring my new interests in the area of Aerospace engineering. Since I recently found out about my interest in Aerospace engineering, I was hoping to get to talk with other people who have studied Aerospace engineering or who had the similar interest as mine. Fortunately, career week was around and when we were given the opportunity to choose our own interest of area to go as a Grade 12 student facilitator, I took advantage of it and was able to attend/facilitate two Alumni sessions  in the area of Aerospace engineering. I have learned skills in taking lead as the facilitator even though I was very nervous but at the same time, because of my interests in wanting to get to know more about Aerospace engineering along with other grade 10s and 11s, my nervousness turned into excitement. I am very thankful for giving us this opportunity to get to know and connect with our East Alumni and helping on our way to college life. I look forward to learn and engage in more activities in the future sessions.

Essay Outline

External factors → change religion → changing culture → affects identity

Concept: culture (change in the culture directly affects change in the identity)

Line of Inquiry: How does Marjane Satrapi show the change in culture in Persepolis?

Thesis

  1. Religious and governmental power affecting culture
  2. Change in Society values and beliefs affecting culture
  3. Change in person itself both internally and externally due to different factors

Topic sentence A: people were forced to wear the veil in their daily lives after the Islamic revolution started which completely changed their lives (culture and religion) and their identity in the society.

Support A1: Marjane’s real self (with veil)  and her ideal self (without the veil)

Support A2: marjane as a child used to believe in god and is really religious unlike her parents. This is important to marjane herself as it shows the understanding of herself. However, when she was around 10, the Islamic revolution started → private religion vs organized religion

Support A3: Abandoning her faith → she was deeply immersed into the war

Mini-conclusion – different external factors can change one’s culture and identity easily with power

Topic Sentence B: People around Marjane; especially herself, was influenced by the people around them who had different beliefs, values, lifestyle and cultural background

Support B1:  taking away freedom, individual rights, justice and safety in society

Support B2:changing her identity after she was exposed to different cultures in her surrounding → Austria

Support B3:   women were mostly looked down upon by the fundamentalists. If they didn’t wear their veil, they were told that they would be sexually assaulted.

Topic Sentence C: Mental struggle due to sudden change in cultural environment and feeling unconnected

Support C1: torn between the modern part of herself and her religious part of herself

Support  C2: accepting her culture and nationality but had to follow the organized culture at the end

Support  C3:  inner conflict; because she was influenced by various western cultural backgrounds, it made her incompatible with society constrained by Islamic traditions and consequently led to her.

Conclusion:

Restated thesis: change in political control and religion, change in society values leads to change in personalities and identities of individuals.

Insight :  One’s culture is created by external factors due to power dynamics  which affects internal personalities and beliefs in their own culture. It depends on the type of people that we are surrounded by and exposure to different cultural backgrounds.
