We had a grade CAS assembly, where Ms. Parr talked about various CAS activities that had taken place throughout the school year, and the importance of having CAS integrated into our daily lives, rather than as an imposing requirement that we had to fulfil. Before the assembly, Ms. Parr reached out to me and a few others, asking us to talk about our sports and how they have shaped us. I chose to talk about the development of resilience in swimming.
For me, swimming isn’t just a sport, it’s part of my personality – if I didn’t swim, I wouldn’t know how to work hard and towards goals. I think a lot of my character is attributed to my years of swimming; years of losing, wanting to give up, being ready to quit. Through all the negativity, I’m somehow still in the sport, and that’s made me resilient. I’ve learnt that I need to work hard if I want to do well, and that there are no excuses for failure. I’m held accountable for my own results, and that makes me want to work harder.
Other people talked about different skills and qualities, but all had the same underlying message: through their sports, each individual developed skills that are applicable in other parts of their lives. This is the spirit of CAS – it’s not just something that’s limited to the IB program, instead, it’s the development of lifelong skills.
