Before the October break, we discussed possible paths of action that we could take, in order to raise funds and spread awareness. During our first session back, Ms. Coles announced that we are one of the 4 GCs to take part in a GC Ball, a formal event aimed at parents for fundraising. This is the first time in East that a group of GCs are planning a formal event to this size, so it’s an exciting and challenging opportunity for us. I have never been a part of planning an event of this size, however I think my previous work organising smaller, student oriented fundraisers will be extremely helpful later on in the planning, as I will be able to tell what is possible, and what cannot be done with the resources and time that we have.
The 4 GCs are located in India and Pakistan, and all share a common theme of supporting education to those who cannot afford and access it. This is a cause I am passionate about because it’s the only way to break the poverty cycle, and as a basic human right, I feel all children should have the chance to be educated. In order to help as best we can, we plan to maximise funds from the event, to send to our respective GCs who will then use the money to develop/better their education system, and provide for more students.
The work in preparation has been divided between the 4 GCs, who will collaborate to bring this plan to fruition. Ladakh is in charge of getting sponsors for the event, and for obtaining items that can be auctioned off. As head of Finance, I am in charge of approving of and reporting all of our purchases to the head of planning. While we are not at a stage where this is happening, I am very excited for when the plans start to take off closer to the event date.
One of my main concerns is that we will encounter a situation where a sponsor/company is willing to support us financially, but their service principles do not align with ours. At that point, depending on the amount of other sponsors we have (possibly close to none), we will have to make a decision whether we need the financial support more than we want the companies sponsoring us to share the same service values. Hopefully, this situation does not occur and everything goes smoothly, however this is a real situation that could happen.
Right now, we’ve begun to put together action plans, and we’re beginning to get a better picture of the event and what needs to be done in preparation. I am not the biggest fan of collaborative work as I usually prefer to do things on my own, but I understand that that would be impossible in this case, so I hope that the event is successful and I can develop more collaborative skills through the process. I’m very excited to see where we can take this, and how it will turn out!
