Term 2 G12 Jazz Band

For Term 2 of Jazz Band, I performed in the Wavelength concert yet again.

LO1-Identify their own strengths and develop areas for growth

I have identified my strengths and areas for growth within the band and as a whole. Supporting the weaker parts and reinforcing the stronger parts is something I still need to work towards within the band. Furthermore, leadership within the saxophones is something I need to work on too.

LO3-Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

Another objective in Term 2 is having a new type of end of year performance at Esplanade that hasn’t been done by this group before. This experience in a professional environment will drive me to practice more and plan for a bigger concert in a more serious environment.

Term 1 G12 Jazz Band

As for my creativities, I joined the Jazz Band again as the first tenor.

LO2- Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

The new piece played in the jazz band was quite hard compared to the pieces in the year before. I developed my skills in jazz playing and score reading.

LO5-Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively

Working with new members in the Jazz band also has proven to be a challenge. As members have left and new members have joined, we now have a disproportionate group of clarinets and flutes, usually not present in Jazz bands. This means that I have to accommodate with the new players.

Term 3 Jazz Combo Reflection

For term 3 we prepared in Jazz Combo to perform during graduation night.

LO5 Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.

In this term, I continued to develop my strength in soloing as well as playing with different people in different bands. Working with people I never worked before with improved my collaboration skills.

Term 3 Jazz Band

In term 3 the main focus of the Jazz Band was to prepare for our concert, From All Corners. We learned the pieces Flute Salad and Nice Work If You Can Get It.

LO5-Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively.

In Nice Work if You can Get It, there was a vocal feature of one of the music students. Playing a piece with a vocal feature is different from playing normally as the human voice is much quieter than the volume of instruments playing in the band. Controlling dynamics by collaboration was a skill that I had to further develop to make the performance successful.

Term 2 Jazz Combo

In Jazz Combo I continued to hone my skills in improvising and playing in small groups by playing new pieces. I learned a new piece “Just the Two of Us” and being able to solo on it.

LO1-Identify their own strengths and develop areas for growth.

With continuing in this service, I identified that I have strengths in following the sheet music and playing together with my small group. Something I need to work on is the different scales from the sheet music for soloing. As I haven’t learned music theory before, it is difficult for me to identify the right scale to follow in my solo.

Term 2 Jazz Band Reflection

In term 2 we performed our 3 prepared songs on stage at the Wavelength concert. The songs included Birdland, Little Darlin, and a self written piece by a student in the music department. These pieces require different techniques to play, as they are very different in tone and rhythm.

Learning outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

Shifting from a high intensity piece, that of Birdland, to a soft and slow piece is a challenging feat. A high amount of control and precision is needed to make the transition and stay within the boundaries. The slower piece is further challenging because of the techniques I need to know to play the piece properly. As I mostly play through the whole piece, keeping up breath with long notes can prove to be challenging. Not rushing, even through fatigue also proved quite challenging. But thanks to the preparation I had in previous rehearsals, I was very well prepared for this concert.

Jazz Combo Term 1 Reflection

Jazz Combo is another activity I am doing for my creativity.  One big challenge I have to face in this creativity is doing improvised solos in front of the class.

LO2- Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

It is quite nerve-wracking to perform in front of a whole group of people and it is definitely something I need to work more towards.

Jazz Band Term 1 CAS Reflection

This is my second year in Jazz Band. I play the Tenor Sax 1 role within the band.

LO5-Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively‚Äč.
Students are able to identify, demonstrate and critically discuss the benefits and challenges of
collaboration gained through CAS experiences.

Being in the second year of this band, I understand already the need to collaborate. In a musical piece, there are lines where many people play similar things, lines where many people play different things, and lines where only some people play. To achieve a good sound of unity, there must be collaboration between the sectionals as well as the whole band. My conductor said the band will sound like a “school band” when everyone plays their own part. Even if everyone plays their part correctly, it will still sound bad compared to a band playing together with a few wrong notes. To accomplish this, using your ears to listen to people playing your part or people providing contrast and adapting accordingly is the best way.

We have worked on many pieces in the first season, now we are starting to prepare these pieces for the December Wavelength concert. I am excited to show our results in the future.
