“UWC makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future”
0-WES aligns with the school mission by having its primary goal as achieving a sustainable future by uniting people for the same cause. We consistently work towards our goal of a sustainable future in two main ways: by working with our partner, Buddha Tzu Chi, and by providing our crockery leasing services at school events. While working towards a sustainable future, we combine our individual strengths and unite to work towards our common goal.
What Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) do we work with?
The aim of our service is to tackle:
→ SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production
→ SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities
→ SDG 13 Climate Action
→ SDG 15 Life on Land
We focus heavily on SDG 12 and 11 by raising awareness on single-use plastic and providing our services in school events to reduce waste.
CAS learning outcomes: what do they look like in this service?
The main outcomes in this service are LO4, LO5, and LO6
LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences.
In 0-WES, there are many opportunities to show commitment, as we have many external activities, such as the family festival and our recycling Sundays, as well as our normal weekly meetings that members are expected to attend.
LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.
In our meetings, we generally work in groups on separate projects, so members have the chance to build collaboration skills. Furthermore, our system of leasing and washing also relies on multiple people working together.
LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.
Our main goal as a service is to reduce the amount of waste that is produced, so all of our participating members engage with the global issue of preventing waste. Our service partner, Buddha Tzu Chi, is a global organisation, and by working with them we also engage with the issue on a global scale.

How meetings typically go
We have our weekly meeting on Wednesdays, starting usually from 3:10 p.m. and ending around 4:00 p.m., unlike other service groups. The classroom (D4.?) that belongs to one of our supervisors, Ms.Lee, is where we meet most of the time, whereas the storage room (B5..?) is used if there is an upcoming event; the storage room contains our cutleries and cleaning equipment.
Because our service demands more working time on weekends for school and local events, sometimes up to a few hours, we allow our members to leave our meeting a lot earlier than the other services do. This is compensation for the hard work we expect our members to put in during long-lasting events, and we expect our members to always be present. Another favourable thing for our service members is that the workload amongst the group is very well balanced, as in no one would need to do more hours of work than the others. If there are any questions they will all be answered ASAP by our group leaders and supervisors.
