2019-2020 Reflections

Lost and Found project

We continue to work on the lost and found project. As this project comes to a close, I think that we can see the impact that exists when items are not collected. The data that we found was quite shocking honestly, even though we expected the number of items to go down, they actually didn’t. We predict that it is because of a lack of awareness within the community. We are still working on a few things at the moment. We have our communications head who is currently working on the awareness videos that we hope to release to the community, and we still have our operations team collecting data. It will be interesting to see the data once we spread our awareness.

New Grade 9s!

Today we welcomed our new grade 9s to the service, in the photo we have Daiki and Neon who are helping out the communications team, which is led by Nicholas Kyriss. On the operations team, there were two other members, Dillon and Pippa. We continuing our project on collecting data to raise awareness about the usefulness of the lost and found.

Albert’s Reflection

Initially, I joined 0WES as it was one of the few environmentally focused services. I feel like climate change is one of the most pressing issues that humanity faces, and I wanted to contribute to combatting this issue. Furthermore, the actions that we take, such as our crockery leasing and recycling Sundays, are much more hands on than what other services may do, which makes being a member of 0WES extremely interesting and fulfilling. I feel like I can do a relatively good job in my role as vice chair since I can organise resources fairly competently. Some skills that I have learned during my time in this service are being able to communicate with other people more effectively to get my points across, as well as being much more responsible and organised. These skills are very applicable to many activities in life.

Abhu’s Reflection

I really enjoyed it the previous year as I felt that I really understood and connected with the missions and the goals of the service. I have been chosen to take over logistics with another member, the role of the logistics is mainly to make sure that all the equipment is ready before an event and that the same equipment is collected after the event. I enjoy the people in the service and I enjoy the fact that we don’t have too many people so it makes it more comfortable and we are able to build stronger bonds. Some goals I have for the service and myself is to increase awareness about sustainability around school and in the Tampines community. I feel that the service has helped me grow my communication and collaboration skills, especially when we participate in events – you have to be able to work with people you never have worked with before and at the same time.

Jinkyu’s Reflection

I joined this service last year in G10 as I was quite curious how Singapore deals with all the waste produced, knowing that Singapore doesn’t produce anything themselves. I quite enjoyed how we actually have recycling trips and get to physically see our accomplishments, which was unusual in my previous service and GCs that I participated in G9, so I decided to continue being a member of this service this year again. I took over the logistics role to better be able to connect with this service, and I wish to continue to be part of this next year too. I felt the bond growing stronger between the local Singapore community and myself over a series of local trips to Tampines, and have learned to collaborate better with new people, which I believe will come useful later in my life. By the end of next academic year, I aim to achieve high environmental sustainability around the local community by promoting recycling and also recruit new young members who will keep the service going even when I graduate, as the mission of this service is really essential for the sustainability of Singapore.
