“Turmoil” is the word that describes the current situation in the Republic of Nicaragua.

In 2007 when Daniel Ortega was re-elected, Nicaragua turned from a safe and peaceful country into a corrupted country full of poverty, violence, and oppression. The civil war is stepping into the country in an irresistible pace, that the government killed over 300 people and injured thousands more in the nation and have been started to arrest and suppress the civilian opposition. Therefore, a mass of migration tide has begun that the numbers of civilian protesters seeking refuge in nearby countries.

By the time, a series of problems have emerged out due to the political repression from the government. Economic turmoil led to a high degree of unemployment and about $1 billion dollars investment by overseas businessmen have been pulled out of Nicaragua; protesters asylum-seeking around and brought economic pressure on the neighboring country; criminal groups gathering spot to engage in many trafficking.

The UN has accused that the Ortega administration and the military of the violation of UDHR (Universal Declaration of Human Rights)  Article 9 due to the implement of inhumane constitution to the civilians. There was deeply concerned by the committee that many reports of violations of human rights in Nicaragua, which has become the main core of most of the debates in the conference today.

The delegates from 14 different countries have agreed and passed on a constructive resolution by the end of the morning, main-submitted by the United States of America and co-submitted by the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, and the Republic of Poland.

The delegate of the United States emphasized the issue that the first priority was the government of Nicaragua should restore the order and balance of human rights violations within the country by adopting a system of tiered trade incentives.

“Be aware that the US is the largest exporter partner of Nicaragua, and the United States accounts for about 58% of all Nicaraguan exports but Nicaragua accounts for less than 1% of the US’ s imports. This means there is no overall effects on the delegate’s nation. Thereby, the delegate suggests that the cooperation between Nicaragua and relevant organizations such as OHCHR is very helpful for restoring social order.”

The main focus of his resolution is that the cooperation with the relevant UN organization to improve bilateral relationships between the organizations and the Nicaraguan government. He has explained that to improve the relationship more efficiently should be started from setting a common goal, for example, establishing peace within the nation. This clause has been approved by most of the delegates and there were more for speeches going on than the against speeches, that the majority of delegates thought it was a beneficial way to improve the current issue in Nicaragua.

Before the resolution has been adopted, many good amendments were made to help the clauses become more efficient and exhaustive as well as more remarkable clauses have been submitted by the delegates in the committee.

Hopefully, the UN would soon process a similar resolution to this stressful issue that is happening at the moment in Nicaragua and more will be addressed in the future stage.
