ELP – Cultural Sensitivity

*What values are being conveyed?
*How are these values shared with their target audience?
*Are certain stereotypes conveyed in any of the ads?

[CHINA]

This advertisement achieves its purpose thorugh the use of popular culture idols. The image is almost structured around the figure with his white outfit drawing attention from the red background and his frame dominating a large proportion of the advertisement. His character is almost photoshopped to enhance beauty standards which reflect the values of the audience. The value and concept of ‘beauty’ and ‘appearance’ is a large reason why many idols rise to fame, especially in eastern Asia including China, Korea and Japan. I don’t think many stereotypes are conveyed in the ad however there is some relevance to eastern Asian beauty standards due to the importance of appearance for idols as discussed.

[SINGAPORE]

The values and cultures of Singapore are conveyed through this advertisement that promotes ‘red hot chicken’. Singapore is famous for its food, in particular, spicy food ranging from chilli crabs to laksas. This value is shared with the target audience through the flavours of the food and is expressed in the text on the advertisement stating “for true spice-lovers” and “red hot chicken”. This may grab the attention of the spice lovers in Singapore gain their interest in the product being sold. I don’t think there are stereotypes associated with the advertisement, only acknowledging the culture in Singapore.
